At best, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 has had a mixed reception since it launched in November 2025, and at worst, it has left a "Mostly Negative" impression on its audience, per the Steam review rating. However, it seems as though Activision is taking lessons from the launch of Black Ops 7 and rethinking how it approaches the Call of Duty franchise altogether. According to Activision chief marketing officer, Tyler Bahl, in an interview with The Game Business, Activision will be moving away from the current structure of long-standing sub-franchises with many consecutive games in a series, and it will be the "epic conclusion for this recent series of Modern Warfare," although he hints that some characters may reappear later or be reinvented for other games.

Bahl comments that Activision isn't happy with every aspect of Black Ops 7, and it is taking community feedback seriously, which is stated to be one of the reasons it previously announced that Modern Warfare 4 would be going back to Call of Duty's more realistic roots, with "no BS," referring to outlandish skins, collaborations, and other content. He adds that Modern Warfare 4 is "getting back to a grounded, military shooter; really making it cinematic, making it authentic, and bringing that edge back that Call of Duty is known for."
