Xbox announced a new group called Xbox Labs in an internal message sent to Team Xbox employees globally and published on Xbox Wire on October 13, 2026. The message, signed “Asha,” says Xbox has created “a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience.” Asha writes, “I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS.”

The announcement follows a specific pattern of player and developer experimentation. Xbox says it has watched games that were not designed for certain hardware get decompiled and rebuilt to run there anyway. Windows PC builds have been translated to Apple Silicon or ported into browsers through WebAssembly and WebGPU, with WebGPU now approaching 90 percent global browser support. The company also said “many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.”

The size of that activity sits against Xbox’s own numbers. People spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing Xbox games, roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide. Xbox also said it has spent 25 years learning how to make great games.

What Xbox Labs is supposed to do

The group will “build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.” Xbox framed the work as a response to assumptions being challenged about “the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games.”

Xbox said the experiments point toward outcomes it wants to support: “making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators.” The announcement calls these “unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.”

Confirmed versus unconfirmed

What Xbox announced is limited to structure and intent. Xbox Labs exists as a small group with Scott asked to stand it up. Xbox said it will “share the tools we build with developers across the industry.” Xbox also said its priorities are not changing: “We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it.”

The source names no products, tools, titles, dates, budgets, or staff beyond Scott and Asha, and it gives no job title for Asha or a role for Scott beyond standing up Xbox Labs. A release date, a first tool, a supported game, and a formal product roadmap all remain unannounced.

Player impact in practice

For players, the most direct signal is that Xbox is treating browser and alternative hardware ports as a design problem. The group’s stated measure of success is whether more people are playing and creating. If Xbox Labs ships tools for the public, players could see more official paths to run games in browsers or on hardware they already own. The announcement does not promise that any existing game will become playable on a new device.

Xbox also placed the move inside a longer history. The company cited bringing hard drives to consoles, online gaming through Xbox Live, Game Pass, and cloud gaming, alongside franchises that have brought millions of people together. Xbox Labs is described as a way to explore new technology without abandoning the work already underway. The source also notes that coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software.

Xbox Labs is the latest in a run of recent Xbox organizational changes. Earlier in October, Xbox introduced the XP division led by Kayleen Walters and named Maria Angelidou-Smith as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft.
