The Daily Grind: What lesser used historical setting or mythological world would make a great MMORPG?

The Meiji Era of Japanese history has always been one that’s fascinated me, both in terms of its real-life events and the stories that have spawned from that period in history. And while there’s most definitely need for lots of research and care to respect the period and the people, I also feel like an MMO world set in that time would make for some tasty conflict in both narrative and gameplay.
I have to presume that there are other folks who think in similar ways. Whether it’s a point in history that doesn’t feel like it gets enough attention, a mythological setting that’s ripe for MMO-scale world building and storytelling, or even just a broad point in global history — and assuming that it’s handled with the requisite deep levels of respect — what sort of mythological or historical time would make for a cool MMORPG, in your opinion? The more obscure the better!
Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
