Story Highlight
- CD Projekt Red assured fans it has no plans to move away from boxed editions.
- Even if limitations force it to be a code and collectibles, the studio still plans to bring them to the market.
- The company acknowledges it can’t control disc editions if a console maker doesn’t allow them.
Sony faced a lot of flak from the gaming industry after announcing it will ditch disc editions of its first-party offerings starting in 2028. Many big-name publishers are also expected to ditch discs as soon as next year, which has made a lot of gamers concerned.
However, CD Projekt Red has now officially confirmed it has no plans to leave us in the dust. The company will continue to release physical editions of its upcoming games, which will include game codes and collectibles at the very least.
Why it matters: CD Projekt Red understands the high demand for physical copies of its games, ensuring it aims to launch boxed editions, even as Sony and other publishers ditch the physical market over the years.

Speaking to PAP Biznes, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michal Nowakowski clarifies that it still aims to launch physical copies, even if it ends up just being a box with code and game collectibles. CDPR understands that there’s a huge demand for boxed editions.
we still want to publish physical copies of our titles. Even if it ends up being a box with code and gadgets related to our games, we will want to launch such a product on the market.

As for discs specifically, the company explains that it ultimately depends on console manufacturers like Sony. If a console maker completely removes support for disc editions, then publishers like CDPR won’t have a way to sell them.

Previously, Nintendo also officially confirmed it will continue to support the physical editions of its games in light of Sony’s controversial move, arguing it knows fans love the format and that it remains incredibly popular for the brand.
