Microsoft is perhaps the most complicit tech company in Israel's illegal apartheid regime and ongoing genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza. Microsoft's complicity in Israel's apartheid and genocide is well documented, exposing its strong ties to the Israeli military, its collaboration with Israeli government ministries, and its involvement in the Israeli prison system, which is notorious for systematic torture and abuse of Palestinians. Microsoft knowingly provides Israel with technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), that is deployed to facilitate grave human rights violations, war crimes, crimes against humanity (including apartheid), as well as genocide. In light of the International Court of Justice's legally-binding rulings to prevent Israel's plausible genocide in Gaza, as well as its July 19 Advisory Opinion affirming Israel's illegal occupation and apartheid system, Microsoft has failed its corperate obligation to prevent genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Microsoft, as well as its boards of directors and executives, may face criminal liability for this complicity.

Microsoft provides the Israeli military with Azure cloud and AI services that are crucial in empowering and accelerating Israel's genocidal war on 2.3 million Palestinians in the illegally occupied Gaza Strip. Microsoft's extensive ties with Israel's military are revealed in investigations by The Guardian with the Israeli-Palestinian publication +972 Magazine, demonstrating how the Israeli military turned to Microsoft to meet the technological demands of genocide.

  • As a consumer, boycott Microsoft products whenever possible. Here are some examples:
    • Microsoft Gaming products (Xbox, Bethesda Softworks Activision Blizzard King)
      • Cancel Xbox Game Pass Subscription
      • Uninstall & boycott key games owned by the company such as Minecraft, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, etc.
      • Boycott Xbox Platform (e.g. Xbox Console or Xbox App on PC) & Hardware (Consoles, Controllers, Headsets, etc.).
    • Microsoft Surface Hardware (Laptops, Headsets, accessories).
    • Microsoft AI / Copilot:
      • Avoid using Microsoft's AI Copilot standalone app or extensions in Bing, Edge, Windows, Office, etc.
      • Change your Microsoft 365 subscription to avoid paying for Microsoft's AI / Copilot (e.g. change from "Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Microsoft 365 Copilot" plan to "Microsoft 365 Business Basic" plan).
    • Microsoft Operating System, Office Suit, Browser, Search services and other tools (Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Bing, MSN, Teams, Skype etc.). Consider switching free and open software instead of another, possibly complicit company.

Yasai

thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm sure I knew this already but unconsciously kept myself from making the connection to my gaming habits.
Boycotting Microsoft as a whole is gonna be hard to do 100% for most people but for me it's actually super doable as I'm pretty much already there

I'm not surprised Microsoft is involved and I doubt this thread will be popular on the gaming side

Gavalanche

Its this situations where I am torn. Obviously what Microsoft is doing is shit and management should 100% have some sort of legal repercussions. But also boycotting the gaming division means potentially hurting thousands of employees who have nothing to do with the decisions made at an executive level. If the games or even gamepass struggle as a result of this, it is those employees who will suffer the consequences, not Satya and others. So this is one of those situations where I struggle to come to terms with what to do, and really don't judge anyone for whichever side they fall on.

I will probably get crucified by that comment, but it is how I think.

God help us the mods are making weekend threads

I knew MS had government contracts for the US military, and so they were complicit in some regard. But I didn't know that they worked directly with the Israeli government, what the fuck.

I've kept my mouth largely shut on this matter but yes it makes me look at things with disdain when i see how much the SNK boycott/ban gets traction here but its crickets over Microsoft. Their Azure servers have been used to compile and collate targets for the Israelis. Its literally involved in the ethnic cleansing.

Army units revealed to be using services provided by Azure include the Air Force's Ofek Unit, which is responsible for managing large databases of potential targets for lethal airstrikes (known as the "target bank"); the Matspen Unit, which is responsible for the development of operational and combat support systems; the Sapir Unit, which maintains the ICT infrastructure in the Military Intelligence Directorate; and even the Military Advocate General's Corps, which is tasked with prosecuting Palestinians and lawbreaking soldiers in the occupied territories.

These target banks have fabricated justification for killing thousands of innocents. Over 15000 dead children , and its thanks to companies like Microsoft for directly aiding such warcrimes

The documents further show that Microsoft personnel work closely with units in the Israeli army to develop products and systems. Dozens of units have purchased "extended engineering services" from Microsoft, in which, according to the company's website, "Microsoft experts become an integral part of the [customer's] team."

Just to be clear, Google and Amazon are also complicit in this mess.

All boycotts affect some worker. This case is no different.

And laid off workers will still be alive and have families.

yeah what the fuck, MS has staff embedded in IDF units..? on the frontlines participating in mass murder and other war crimes?

i think i need more sources on that besides that one article above.. although i can believe it. nothing really suprises me in these times anymore.

972mag is an Israeli news source, they were among the first to shine light on this (among other atrocities).

They do some excellent investigative work, this issue of Big Tech cozying up to genocidaires is among the more recent stories.

CaveGhostPurp

Thanks for this thread, I wasn't aware. Luckily I don't use any of their products, to my knowledge. Minus what I'm forced to use briefly at work on occasion. Fuck Microsoft.

ze_

I don't particularly care for "is this surprising??" posts. I understand that some people who respond like that are trying to compel people to chase logical conclusions and make inferences based on other patterns, but I think it's unhelpful. This is a succinctly written and well argued call to action, demonstrating a clear connection and providing an equally clear cut and reasonable suggested response. It is going to be news worthy to some—the permissiveness of Israel's brutality does rely on some level of ignorance of the mass complicity and support—and useful to many.

I'd love an alternative. MacBook that dual boots SteamOS would be my dream.

Knight613

This isn't really very surprising. Microsoft were also banning Palestinians from Skype for daring to call their family in Gaza.

The Xbox portion may have nothing to do with it, but it is the portion of Microsoft most people on a site like this are probably most likely to use.

ok. well shit.. just depressing.

Seems reasonable. Don't have a lot of faith in your average gamer, though.

Good thing my Gamepass sub ran out. I won't be going back to it.

Fuck Microsoft.

Fuck 'em.

Kasey

Sorta hard for me as I bought a Series X years ago, have GP for the next year, and have a library of hundreds of Xbox games that would leave me out thousands of dollars going to a different platform. Still, I can abide the boycott in every other facet and spread the word that MS loves working for IDF and ICE doing Nazi shit.

Xarlia

Boycotts are supposed to be disruptive.

Reminds me of people who complain about disruptive protests such as blocking roads. Yes, they'll inevitably end up blocking service and emergency vehicles as part of that demonstration. Yes, that is very much the point. The roads wouldn't be blocked if the source of the protest were solved, but of course that goes over most people's heads and they'll instead demonise the people trying to advocate for social progress.

Khanimus

Boycotts are supposed to be disruptive.

"But I have things to dooooo"

Siresly

I'd already stopped using OneDrive recently on account of Microsoft being a US company. Previous to that I've been boycotting their games platform due to it being bad, but not their games. Previous to that I've been using OpenOffice for what feels like possibly decades. I'd say that I'll boycott their hardware, but I wasn't planning on buying any anyway. Switched from DuckDuckGo(US) to Ecosia, which uses Bing as a web crawler apparently, but there doesn't really seem to be a better option yet that's not US based. I learned of and tried Mojeek for a bit, but it just wasn't good enough.

Games and Windows, I think is the extent to which I really use Microsoft products and services. I don't know that I'll reduce it beyond that. Those are areas where I may be a hypocritical ethical consumer only improving society somewhat rather than perfectly. I'm not gonna argue "but think of the devs!" or whatever, because I hate that disingenuous copout bullshit. It's purely about me wanting to play games I think I'll enjoy and loathing even just looking into the potential for software hassles related to switching OS. This information will live in my brain though, so maybe I'll prioritize other games over Microsoft's or whatever. I can wait to play South of Midnight until the price is lowered. Stuff like that.

I mean when it's either trying not to die in the back of an ambulance or trying not to lose a job that pays your bills -- it's valid to complain but understand why disruption is also necessary. having nuance is, of course, a thing.

but when it's someone complaining about not being able to get to a Starbucks super fast no, that's stupid.

Show me a protest that's deliberately blocking an ambulance?

Alright, I won't fuck with their stuff on any level anymore except in situations where I have to (Teams etc at work). Thanks for the heads-up.

Microsoft is definitely the biggest contributor to the genocide out of the big 3. I'm glad someone decided to bring attention to this.

I get what you're saying, and just to be clear I ain't trying to pile on you here or anything, but while I have sympathy for the devs, them losing a job and the situation for Palestinians is so completely incomparable that my sympathy for the devs ends there. They won't be the victims of a genocide should they lose work for MS' shitty choices

LordRuyn

Nothing I can do about my job or my gamepass sub, but I'm already running Fedora on one of two machines, and a Bazzite dual boot on the other.

If only they weren't being boycotted by the mass consumer anyway.

On a serious note, it's almost impossible to not use products or services that are in someway tied to MS given the ubiquitous nature of Windows, Office, Azure and whatever else. Of course the easiest to boycott out of those, for any reason, is for sure Xbox.

Kazooie

Microsoft seems to being their part already.

Jetpaction

Give Bazzite a try if you want a SteamOS optimized Linux distro that can be installed on any PC, but works best with AMD GPU's.

It's the only one most people with jobs or going to school can reasonably boycott. That's why I think BDS is focusing on it, asking people to boycott the rest and expecting them to actually do it is well... Yeah.

100%, I can see why it has been chosen.

Thanks for the thread, cancelling my game pass sub.

Rustyspider13

Thanks for the thread. I assumed MS would be involved indirectly due to being involved in US military stuff, but this is more comprehensive than I thought it'd be. I don't use MS gaming products anyway, so I'm not really contributing here; but I guess I'll never own an Xbox for the rest of my life. Not buying any ports they put out either.

Xarlia

There should be laws in place that make a service provider liable for that services usage in war crimes. You either immediately sever that service or you are yourself committing war crimes.

How the fuck this isn't already a thing is insane.

it's kinda tough when your own government's are the ones doing the war crimes or defining what is a war crime. there is already a sanctions list so that probably would be the solution.

just on the following

Disappointing, but not wholly unexpected as Israel is basically an extension of the United States. An ungodly amount of money is spent on lies to make it solely look like a religious conflict. It's all a disguise to make people hate each other, and to keep the conflict ongoing. In reality it is technology and warfare that go hand-in-hand. It's just sickening when you think about it; for the sake of experimentation we don't mind killing people, most often children.

Don't know if it'll have any serious impact, but one thing's for sure; I can live without their products.

And the fact that the UN can't do a thing to change any of this if a powerful member goes rogue is unthinkable, too.

Khanimus

The climate campaigners have hit back at the force's handling of the incident and claimed it was the Met police blocking the ambulance so they could "blame it on a protest march going in the other direction".

It doesn't sound like they had any intention of deliberately blocking an ambulance.

And the fact that the UN can't do a thing to change any of this if a powerful member goes rogue is unthinkable, too.

yep, i would argue its still a net good for humanity but the un is clearly failing. maybe if the us hegemony falls; the un might be a bit more meaningful but unsure; maybe someone else equally ambivalent takes up the reign.

I don't want to argue against my own allegiances too much here, but if you block roads, it's a complete given that Emergency vehicles will be impacted and that impact is an unavoidable and known quantity, and hence deliberate.

The point is -- They wouldn't be blocked if our Governments capitulated to reasonable demands.
