Malum Caedo Returns With A New Ally
Picking up directly from the events of the original Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, the sequel sends players back into a universe where mercy is in short supply and ammunition is always welcome. The original game was a love letter to the shooters of the 1990s, combining chunky pixel art with modern controls and relentless combat. We awarded it 4.5/5 in our Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun review, praising its satisfying action and its ability to appeal to Warhammer fans and newcomers alike.
The campaign follows two playable characters, each bringing a different approach to the business of purging heretics.
Malum Caedo returns as the formidable Sternguard Veteran, a familiar force for anyone who enjoyed the first game. Joining him is Nyra Veyrath, a battle-hardened Sister of Battle who brings her own abilities, weapons and combat style to the fight. Whether you prefer to charge into the fray or take a more agile approach, the choice of protagonist gives the sequel a fresh angle on its brutal action.
The tale also branches, with different paths leading to unique levels. That adds another reason to explore beyond a single run through the story, as you take the fight to new locations across a corrupted galaxy.
Bigger Weapons, Nastier Enemies And Plenty Of Pixelated Blood
Boltgun 2 sticks to the fast-paced, old-school FPS approach that made its predecessor stand out. Expect explosive firefights, aggressive enemies and an arsenal of devastating weapons, from the lethal chainsword to the trusty shotgun. New weapons and foes expand the combat, ensuring there’s more to contend with than simply repeating the same encounters.
The environments also stretch beyond familiar battlefields. You’ll travel through towering hive cities and treacherous mangrove swamps, with each biome presenting its own challenges. Among the new threats are Bloodletters and their fearsome daemonic Juggernauts, enemies that can turn a confident charge into a desperate fight for survival.
A Retro Shooter With Modern Momentum
The sequel builds on the foundations of the first game, with two playable characters, more weapons, fresh locations and a branching campaign. The formula remains gloriously direct: move, aim, shoot, and keep moving before the next wave of enemies catches up with you.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is out now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC for £20.99 (Xbox Store price), yet there is no Game Pass support at launch. If the original left you wanting another excuse to charge into a horde of heretics, Auroch Digital has brought back the pixelated mayhem with a bigger arsenal and an even wider battlefield.
