下一代 Xbox 售价介于 $1200 与 $1800 之间

Recently, we learned that the RAM and SSD costs for the PlayStation 6 were already projecting out to cost almost $700, before factoring in any of the other necessary components. Things aren't looking any better for the next-gen Xbox, dubbed Project Helix, which could ultimately end up costing up to $1800.

In a massive report on Fortune following Asha Sharma's first year as the CEO of Xbox, it was claimed that Microsoft currently projects Helix to cost somewhere between $1200 and $1800, a huge jump from the $500 consoles we've grown used to over the last two decades. That is, unless Microsoft decides to subsidise some of the cost, selling the console at an initial loss in an effort to make the money back through things like subscriptions and game purchases.

However, as we've talked about earlier this year, console makers aren't too keen on subsidising their hardware at this point and the reason for that is simple. Free to play games like Fortnite are now massive on consoles. There is a much higher chance nowadays that someone buys a console, downloads their favourite ‘free' game, and never ends up spending money elsewhere in the console ecosystem, thus making it harder for the likes of Microsoft or Sony to accept a loss on the initial hardware sale.

Unfortunately at these prices, it is unclear how well console gaming will fare. The likelihood is that growth will be slower than previous generations and as a result, the majority of developers will continue to focus their efforts on current-gen devices.
