Nintendo Drops A New Switch 2 V2 Model, Yet The System’s Display Remains Unimproved
Earlier this summer, we learned that a new model of the Nintendo Switch 2 LCD panel was in the works. Although details were scarce about the improvements this new panel would bring, there was reason enough to be excited by it, as the current model's panel leaves something to be desired in terms of response time, as its 50% slower response time, compared to the original Switch panel, leads to significant ghosting issues that have a significant impact on handheld play.
When this panel would be introduced remained a mystery as well, and it seems like it could be a while longer until we see it installed in new Nintendo Switch 2 units, as Nintendo has now launched a new model of its current-generation system, but has left its biggest issue ignored, for the time being.
Console and controller technician @Modyfikator89 took a good look at the new Nintendo Switch 2 model and shared their findings on X. "We disassembled and compared both revisions: V1 (BEE-CPU-01) vs V2 (OSM-CPU-01). Same NVIDIA chip revision, same 12GB RAM, different supplier, revised motherboard, different fan variant, new user-replaceable battery," the technician wrote. "Our verdict: Switch 2 V2 looks like a manufacturing and repairability refresh, NOT a performance upgrade. No evidence of faster graphics, more RAM or improved cooling. Already own V1? There’s no compelling reason to upgrade."
As such, the new Nintendo Switch 2 model with a replaceable battery doesn't mark the debut of the new Sharp-assembled displays discovered in the summer. However, since @Modyfikator89 could only check out a single unit, there's still the chance that some units could feature the new panel. While it would be far from ideal, echoing a little too closely the hardware lottery users had to deal with during the Nintendo 3DS days, it would indicate that Nintendo is not entirely oblivious to the system's worst issue, and is taking stepts to fix it.
