Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Slop Edition |OT| A Shameful Display (UPDATE: GAME PULLED FROM SALE)
Total War: Shogun 2 is objectively the best game Creative Assembly ever made.
Impeccable faction balance. Rapid-pace battles. Siege gameplay that isn't a total slog. Excellent theming and aesthetics. A DLC expansion so good that they realised they could sell it as its own separate game (Fall of the Samurai).
To this day, the answer to the question "what Total War should I play as a beginner" is Shogun 2. And unless you specifically love Warhammer or another period of history, it's highly likely the answer to "what Total War game should I revisit as a series veteran?" is also Shogun 2.
So what's new in the Complete Edition?
- Program updated from 32-bit to 64-bit, which would give you theoretical better performance and future hardware compatibility if the new graphics thrown on top didn't murder your framerate!
- Brand new textures that don't match the look of Sengoku Jidai-era Japan because they were ported over from Total War: Three Kingdoms on the assumption nobody would notice!
- Hand-crafted woodblock print unit cards upscaled and aggressively de-noised to remove all those annoying fine details that might distract you from the gameplay!
- Cool 3D cutscenes replaced with ghastly genAI 2D animations to help you quicker find the skip cutscene command in speedrun record time!
- Compatibility with all of your favourite Steam Workshop mods removed to better educate you on the existence of mod.io just in case you desired to learn a new modding workflow!
- BONUS: A sixth finger added to many of the human portraits at no extra cost to you! That's 20% extra value!
Uhhh...
Look in all seriousness, if you own Shogun 2 (and you probably do, as SEGA has given it away for free multiple times) then you probably want to buy this as a $10 upgrade before that promotion ends. The 64-bit application probably has a longer shelf life than the ageing original. I've played a few games and it seems fine, just immensely disappointing. It sure as shit wouldn't be worth $40.
And you never know: SEGA and Creative Assembly might do a panic and fix it up lots in future like they did with Total War: Pharaoh, which went from one of the least compelling entries in the series to a contender for top 5.

I didn't realize that the upgrade discount was limited to November
Might bite after all.
Is there still an option to play the original once you upgrade?

Yes, it adds a new item to your library instead of replacing the original.
I currently have both installed so I can compare.
Despite my tone this new version is probably how I'm going to play the game going forward but I need more time to judge that for sure.
One of my favorite games of all time... but god they should have handled this with more care.
I said this earlier, and honestly I'm still very interested in this release if only for modern compatibility and UI scaling. Luckily the discount lasts for month, they basically have that period of time for themselves to put out a "We hear you" statement, a patch, maybe a roadmap, and they'll still have my $10.
This game kept "shameful display" at the top of my vocabulary for years, so I appreciate the OT title.
I'm tempted to pick it up for $10 since I never bought any of the DLCs outside of the blood pack and just play the OG version.
But I'll likely wait and see what they do first before buying it.
Oh god I just noticed the hands in the OP... goddamn son lol

I laughed out loud at this section, but only because it's so sad to me, and we'll likely see a lot more of this sort of thing for the foreseeable future.
not the hands
If they communicate that they are going to fix it in the following weeks I guess i'll grab it
Thread title is superb
I can't remember the last time a Total War game (the historical ones) came out and didn't have [severe] issues.
Pharaoh... Yeah lol.
Troy had people leaving it alone because it came out on Epic for a year.
Three Kingdoms was dropped really quickly.
Britannia wasn't really recieved well.
Atilla still has bad performance, even now.
Rome II... Yeah.
Maybe it's Shogun 2?
It's just sad - I used to be such a huge fan of this series but they keep making the same mistakes over and over and never seem to learn anything or progress from it.
Honestly it is a diabolical abomination and the developers/Sega should be ashamed of themselves.
As a fan of the original, I do appreciate this Anti-OP, OP lmao
Dunno what the hell they were thinking with this. Shogun 2 is beloved!
I will keep the old version. It works fine. This is just a quick cash grab.
One of the worst reviewed games I've ever seen on Steam.
Well done CA.

Three Kingdoms was legit a great game, they just made some bad decisions early on in the DLC phase that ended up hurting later DLC sales (making the first DLC something after the Three Kingdoms period ended, that wouldn't let you use any existing characters or content, a period that most fans aren't interested in...isn't a great strategy).

Rome 2, after they fixed it, is one of the best TW to date
A shame they released in that state…
I was hoping for a Medieval 2 Remaster, but maybe it's better to leave it untouched.

if they'd gone with Feral like they did with Rome Remastered then all would be fine.
Sadly...

Wait, they took textures from 3rd century China and put them in 15th century Japan and assumed no one would notice?
This is so unbelievably disappointing. This was my most played Total War game. AI and laziness strike again ![]()
I bought it for the reduced price not knowing how bad it was, and I hope future patches and mods will fix most of the issues, but yeah I am immensely disappointed how hard they flubbed this game. It's honestly just respectless towards the legacy of the game and an insult towards the original developers who worked so passionately and hard to create this masterpiece.
(Taken from Reddit): One of the original artists who worked on many of the ui portraits and illustrations has commented on it and is not pleased.

Honestly I am just so done with CA at this point. Historical Total War as a series is just horribly mis-managed and has been for a long time and I just don't have the patience for it now.
I was there for the complete shit show that was Empire's release, the shit show that was Rome 2, the complete abandonment of 3 Kingdoms which was one of their best releases and now all of this shit.
As stated in the OP Shogun 2 is absolutely top tier which makes this release even more painful to watch from the side-lines. It is all very much:

The CA is running from the battlefield, a shameful display.
CA is a company with no specific care for me, but in this instance I think Sega can be blamed. Warhammer 3 has been getting steady updates and work. It seems odd that CA would treat a previous beloved title so shabbily. Do they fuck up? Of course. But this seems on another level.

Writing was on the wall when MrSmartDonkey (aka the Shogun 2 creator) was asked by CA directly to come out of retirement. They offered him a really generous sponsorship deal to make a series of tutorial videos and an LP series for the release. He set about recording, got hit with tons of bugs, and told CA he couldn't in good conscience take their money and promote the product, so released a "this sucks" video and decided to retire again.

After a bunch of supportive comments he's now started a brand new LP series on the OG Shogun 2 release lol

It's sad. I genuinely thought after all the work (for free!) they put into Pharaoh that they'd turned a corner.
It's deflating for Medieval III as well... if that game comes in hot then the historical side of the franchise may be over.
Probably one of the greatest unforced error.
There are worse companies out there, but I think SEGA is up there as one of the most embarrassing ones. For every success they have, they seem to make like three boneheaded decisions. What the fuck were they thinking?
