I've noticed a distinct lack of PlateUp hype, but the game is really good. Amazing with friends but also solid solo! It has the classic restaurant simulator elements you know and love:

StoreGifs_COOK.gif

but each round you are offered both potential restaurant upgrades:

StoreGifs_UPGRADE.gif

These upgrades can be significant, there are several automation modules; you can make a dish completely automated if you plan well enough and get the right items!

Every three rounds something to make things a little more complicated. Making Turkey? Now you have to add gravy for some orders! Or maybe all the customers get a little less patient...

How does it compare to Overcooked?

There's a great Reddit comment (and more in that thread) that helps explain it:

Overcooked is, in many ways, a puzzle game. There are handcrafted level layouts, typically with an intended method of completing the required tasks. Unlike many traditional puzzle games, the solution requires a decent amount of skill to execute, so it can often be confusing... do I have the wrong solution? Or am I simply not executing it well enough?

Plateup offers a single experience- one that is impacted by random generation and player choices. Rather than searching for a solution and executing, it is about making choices to build up a restaurant that fits your play style.

There's also an active modding scene to create new dishes; people have already added soups, drinks, and even a whole American Breakfast mod. The devs are responsive and have consistently been adding new content and QOL upgrades. Highly recommend!

There's a demo to try, too!

Just so I can calibrate my expectations around your opinion, would you say Overcooked is also fun solo? When you say this is a solid solo experience I'm a bit skeptical, because imo Overcooked is absolutely awful to play solo.

Agamon

My brother and I were playing on the weekend. We've done holiday runs through the Overcookeds during my visits back home for Christmas, and this hits a lot of the same notes, but more roguelite.

My wife and I love this game a lot! The developer(s?) Do add seasonal content for free from time to time that includes some nice QoL changes.
Personally, it's just missing one mode or two to let us play around with the automation parts and understand how they work. But being able to see our kitchen grow to the point we don't need to worry how the turkey or pizza is prepared is quite dope.

This is basically my GOTY for last year. Loved this game, literally couldn't stop thinking about it constantly. I was jonesing when I couldn't play it lol.

It's the metamorphosis of overcooked I always wanted. I really liked Overcooked, but it is is something you play once and go "that was neat." but this game you can just play over and over.

If you're a fan of quick progression, choices, seeing how your strategy can be impacted by different RNG or decisions, then this is the one for you. I wouldn't play alone though. These games are most fun with a friend, because picking a job (ex: being the cook, the server, or a janitor/dishwasher) is another part that keeps the game feeling fresh rather than trying to do it all every time.

Also I found this game less annoying than overcooked. I felt like I was constantly fumbling in that one with the controls. This one felt better.

Wait, is there a restaurant simulator that's similar to PC Building Simulator and all those games??

Not at all.

Was about to ask exactly the same question !

Overcooked and Plateup is not comparable at all in my opinion, apart from the Kitchen theme, they work on totally different principles.
The way Plateup plays singleplayer is different from multiplayer, but most importantly, singleplayer in Plateup is actually also very fun.
In multiplayer, all players are cogs in the machine, having different distinct roles like server, cook or full-time dishwasher because your friends refused to spend money on a better sink lol.
In singleplayer its instead mostly about automation, to keep up with the order your need to automate away most of the kitchen.
Its in singleplayer the rougelike elements shine in my opinion, where you have to actually plan and strategise, in multiplayer the stuff you get doesn't really matter as much.

There's cooking simulator but it's not really about managing a restaurant, more just being a chef in the back. Don't think there's a restaurant manager unless there's some janky one out there I never heard of.

I'll clarify on solo: I think the roguelite element makes it feel a lot less tedious. Doing Overcooked solo feels like I need to try again and again to solve the puzzle they've laid out for me.

Here, playing PlateUp solo feels like I'm building my own little restaurant. If something isn't working, I can change the layout. I can also *automate* a lot of the tasks, and it's pretty satisfying to have a partially (or fully??) automated dish ready to go. In essence, you have the ability to improve your kitchen here in way that you can't do in OC.

That said, if you don't enjoy the core mechanics of a restaurant sim (cooking, prepping, serving), this one won't change your mind.

I am here as well. *So* satisfying to have a kitchen humming.

So good, and with Steam Workshop mods for QOL and new items etc.

Yeah, definitely get the mod that turns off collisions during prep stage. That's a huge improvement right there.

I'm gonna try out the demo on the Deck, so thanks for that. I also scrolled below and saw they have a new game out. That looks right up my alley too.

Tromanaut

I play this with my wife today and we absolutely love it. She likes to be front restaurant and design the space, while I handle the kitchen. When things get hectic, she will help out until we get automation setup.

That no clip mode is necessary when doing automation lol

ZeroX

PlateUp is… okay in single player. It's playable. But honestly there's about fifty better roguelites out there. I bounced off it after two runs.

Now co op is an absolutely different beast where it might be best in the genre. It's so fun. Played with online friends and had an absolute blast. It also feels so much less toxic than Overcooked.

Good shout, added the demo mention to OP! The demo should give folks a good feel as to whether it's for them, I believe it also supports multiplayer.

DJ_Lae

Apparently I own it (February Humble choice?) but haven't tried it yet.

Will have to rectify that. We'll see if any of my daughters want to try, they all didn't really care for Overcooked so maybe this will be more enjoyable.

What's the new game?

chrominance

This is the first I've heard that PlateUp is even playable solo (I also didn't know Overcooked was playable solo but it sounds terrible so it might as well not be). Suddenly I am way more interested in getting this sometime down the line.

Yerffej

What's the new game?

A solitaire rogue like or something. Released last month.

RetroMG

I've been meaning to try this with my wife for forever, since we both love Overcooked. I've watched a few let's plays online and it looks so fun.

AviAvi

I'll have to see if my husband will play this with me, sounds fun!

I was about to make basically this same post again. This game is now at 18 total main dishes and is currently 90% off on Steam. They also added some progression for each dish, 10 Heat levels (like ascension levels in STS) and three Chill levels (make a dish even easier).

My friends and I just got back into it and I can confirm it's timeless. I also appreciate how willing they are to stick their game in charity bundles. Truly still one of the most delightful co-op experiences in gaming.
