It's about time we made an OSRS thread on Era and with the game coming to Steam on February 24th it is a perfect time to make it, the game will probably see a boost with the Steam release and I want to talk with fellow Runescapians about their adventures in the game as I assume other people do too. Now I am going to shamelessly copy the Steam page for the OT because it's perfect for people who have never played OSRS.

WHAT_IS_OSRS_.png

Greetings, adventurer! Rooted in the origin of MMOs, Old School RuneScape is the only ever-lasting, ever-evolving adventure that is shaped by you.

Released way back in 2013, Old School RuneScape is RuneScape as you *used* to know it! Based on the 2007 build of the globally popular open world fantasy MMORPG, Old School is constantly updated with improvements and new content voted on by you, the fans! The close relationship between developers and players is central to what makes Old School so magical.

A-world-of-possibilities.png

So, you want to be a master cook? Or a powerful mage? Whether you're here for the rich story and lore, the challenging combat, to fight alongside others or against them, to journey alone or simply to experience the magical world of Gielinor, Old School can be any adventure you want.

Master 23 diverse skills across a huge array of play styles
Take on over 140 quests spanning the fascinating and varied game world
Confront dozens and dozens of bosses
Risk everything in an assortment of PvP encounters
Profit from a thriving and dynamic in-game economy

CHOOSE_YOUR_CHALLENGE.png

Some people just want to hang out with friends. And you'll find plenty of folk to do that with in Gielinor. But those who want seek a different kind of adventure have plenty of choices, too.

No matter what you're specializing in, the quest for the best loot will have skillers and perfectionists obsessing over their character builds. The strongest wand, the mightiest bow, the most *fabulous* hat – there's always something to aim for.

And if you're among the most ardent adventurers, be sure to let people know by donning one of the many Capes of Accomplishment. Who knows, maybe one day the fabled Max Cape can be yours?

EVOLVING_WORLD.png

A rich story and deep well of lore await those whose interests are more cerebral, too. From the dastardly dealings of corrupt rulers to the day-to-day musings of the village baker, tales of both... world-shattering urgency and casual procrastination abound.

Over two dozen major quest-lines allow players to delve into Gielinor's past and future, and the pages are still being written, waiting for you to witness their unfolding. With major game updates every week, the experience never stops evolving and improving.

This world goes where you go, too, with full cross-compatibility across PC and mobile versions!

PLAYERS_DECIDE.png

The key to Old School's success is both special and unique – it's you! From the day Old School was born, we recognized that building on the game's foundations while staying loyal to its very essence was essential. That's why players have the deciding vote on every improvement that is or is not introduced to the game.

In-game polling isn't the only interaction, either. Join developers on their regular behind-the-scenes live-streams, or chat with them directly across our many social channels. Old School is owned just as much by its players as it is its makers.

MORE_WITH_MEMBERSHIP.png

Old School is a free-to-play game that anyone can enjoy, and many of our players have been with us for almost two decades without ever paying for membership. But Membership unlocks even more thrilling content to get stuck into. Members enjoy access to:

8 additional skills, including Farming, Thieving and Slayer.
Access to the entire game world map
Over 120 additional quests
Access to powerful, exclusive items
Dozens of exclusive mini games
Additional navigation options

Furthermore, players can pay for Membership with Bonds that are either purchased or earned in-game! Membership is shared across both Old School RuneScape and RuneScape.

Great OT, this game is great. I didn't get to play the OSRS as much as I played the og game on the old days, but still had some fun.

I have some millions and I'm willing to give it away, quote me if you want it.

I'll take some! I've been playing both OSRS and RS3 during the pandemic

Done.

I'll take it lol.

Still have some? I do have a very noobie OSRS account, some millions would be good to set me on my way :D

The good Ole days! I remember being part of a woodcutting group back in runevillage. That was so much fun. Ironically, Runescape taught me a lot about stocks and commerce.

Runescape is a game I always heard about, but never played. My bag was always Ultima Online. I might have to give this a try finally.

Multievolution

Ah the game that I used to love but now has two paths: rs3 the game that lost sight of itself and old school which lives in the past.

I played RuneScape from 2005 off and on for 13 years, I liked rs3 well enough though it definitely has issues to this day most evident in the addition of mtx the dwindling player base of 3 made it a ghost game, I could never however go back to osrs, not only does the idea of starting from scratch put me off but the fact is the graphics simply are outdated even before RuneScape 3 the graphics where better.

If it ever comes to console I would be willing to give it a go though it's a shame it will forever be a shadow of its former self (the creator Andrew regrets selling it to this day)still on occasion listen to the soundtrack though.

Cyanity

Probably ny most played game ever. Been doing Tob lately with the clan and it's been a blast. I still think both versions of Runescape are the best MMOs ever.

This is how I got my runite armor set. Mining coal in the Lumbridge swamps and then selling them in Falador. Good times.

Damn, was there ever a RuneScape OT last year? I missed it completely. I respect the hell out of Old School but I still play RuneScape to this day so yeah.

Crash

Haven't really played much in the last 3-4 years but I still log on to check out any new big updates.

I'm disappointed that no game really scratches that Runescape itch. This game had so much you could do outside of combat. The big thing was that this side activities had a sense of authenticity to em, like the devs put time into the mechanics and looks and feel of everything. With other games I've played, everything that's not combat-related feels so half baked. It's disappointing.

Umdlye

Lovely to see an OSRS OT. Will be fun to watch during the Steam launch! (Also, godspeed to the Jagex staff appointed to the Steam forums)

I can sort of get behind this, honestly. It helps that we have lodestones, the XP rates and ways to grind levels are way more enjoyable / doable, on top of this the game itself just looks so damn good now. This is without the upcoming character model updates etc. And I say this as someone who genuinely loves OSRS lmao

Evil Lucario

I mean, I think it's super telling that you see OSRS content creators try out RS3 and legitimately enjoy it instead of parroting a lot of the common talking points against it. The game is in a more optimistic place right now than previous years, so yeah.

Any helpful tutorials for getting back into RS 3? I can't even begin to fathom restarting old-school, but I wouldn't mind revisiting my character again in the newest version.

ConfusedOwl

Runescape and Diablo 2 were the two games that got me into online gaming. RS especially has a special place in my heart as being the first online game I ever played and probably the game I've spent the most time playing ever. Not currently subbed but I do like to dip in every once in a while but I can't see myself ever going back to the official client even with the Steam release. RuneLite is too useful to stop using.

No idea on big overall tutorials. However:

1) I'd recommend doing quests to have a sense of direction. Not only are they quite enjoyable for the most part, but they'll point you in a direction of "okay I'll train this skill to do this quest" and etc. And that can easily spiral off for you to get even more micro goals to accomplish.

2) Some dailies are really good and let you upkeep membership with ingame currency pretty easily. Vis wax at 50 Runecrafting is especially a big one.

3) Try not to get TOO caught up in efficiency. I personally love taking combat to ridiculous lengths and squeezing out as much juice as possible, but not everyone will enjoy that. So play at your own pace and don't worry TOO much about playing badly for now.

Here's some videos from some friends of mine for some more tips as well:

Appreciate this, friend. I last played in... 2012? Somewhere around there. I remember maxing several skills back in the day, but everything beyond that is hazy.

Oh damn, you have missed a LOT then, like how combat got overhauled in November 2012. But there's still quite some good in this game, so hopefully you enjoy it.

I take it back - 2012 was when I stopped, then I picked it back up for a few

months

(edit - *weeks* based on my play history) around the Invasion of Falador in 2015 since some friends wanted me to try it out again.

But that's it over the last decade. I'm hoping it's still somewhat enjoyable and it sounds like it is from what I'm seeing.

Yeah it is but they also added some stuff to F2P like new quests and bosses.

Those new quests they added sure were a bitch, but I did it a couple weeks ago!

I mean, I can start one if you'd like? (edit) Apparently from a quick Google search, RS3 and OSRS clans aren't* mixed together. So we'd have to make two different ones for both games unless we wanna do a Friend Chat only which then doesn't matter.

However, Clans (especially RS3) we'd benefit from because of being able to make a base with places to grind etc IIRC

I forgot that the Steam release is coming soon! I've played OSRS off and on since it came out. Maxed account, beat inferno late last year. My favorite MMO of all time. I haven't been playing much these last couple months due to burnout and other games occupying my time but I look forward to seeing all the returning players come through thanks to the Steam release. OSRS's version of Gielinor has always been my favorite fictional world to get lost in :)

Congratulations! I had the quest cape for a while in RS3 until I stopped playing only a few years ago, I hope to one day go back, complete all the quests I have missed and get the cape again.

I'd love to Play OSRS for the new quests they added (and to replay quests I have literally not played in 10-15 years), but the idea of grinding all my stats again is daunting and too time consuming, which is why I stuck with RS3 even though I acknowledged OSRS was doing many things right. Though I am thinking of taking the plunge now, seems as good a time as any!

If there's one thing in RS that I think remains quality and but it above other MMOs for me, it was the quests. Its a damn shame they are not as big of a focus in RS3 anymore, we'll be lucky to get 5 quests a year these days.

OSRS is meant to be getting its own Clan system at some point this year, but updates get rescheduled and moved around a lot so who knows when

Oof, so by default that means either make a RS3 Clan for now or use a Friend Chat?
(Speaking of RS3, are we ever getting an OT for it?)

bye

I have to say, I wish graphically/mechanically they would bring over some of the modern updates. I tried playing a couple weeks ago with some friends just for fun, and while I did enjoy it, the game being so archaic just isn't something I can stomach for long anymore. Like the lack of draw distance which is a big one, or only loading little sections of the map at a time. Or simple QOL changes that exist in the modern game but not in this one, like how Run works and how your Gold gets it's own slot. I get that people are hellbent on keeping it as classic as possible, and they have brought many changes, but it's just not enough to make me be able to play for more than a short period of time.

Which sucks, because while I feel overall the main game is better, there's been too much added and changed to make me feel compelled to get back in as it's overwhelming. I like the stripped down version and maybe it will get better in a year or two.

Steam release or not you should never play OSRS without Runelite.

I agree wholeheartedly with the first paragraph. I love OSRS so much, I played for so damn long. However, playing more than a couple of hours every other day is the most I can do because of how much better RS3 is. From lodestones to simply being able to rest, having to work around those mechanics feel like they require way more effort than I'm willing to put in. RS3 has it's problems, sure, but it's not nearly bad enough for me to switch over to OSRS full time.

Undrey

Ahhh OSRS. I'll never be able to invest as much time as I did when I was younger, but I will always have fond memories of it. And probably play a few hours of it every few years.

So many dumb memories from the original game. I remember once meeting some person with "black" in their account name. I'd lost them and, me being the dumbass non-English native kid, just kept typing out that part of their username over and over again in an attempt to find them. Needless to say, I was really confused and bummed out the next day when I found out I was muted and couldn't type for the rest of my time with the game.

You can't replicate things like that (i.e. being a peanut brained kid).

Azzanadra

I know peak RS nostalgia is for 2006-2007, but for me, Runescape was at its best post-2008. It felt like Jagax was firing on all cylinder with some of their best quests, minigames, much-needed graphical updates (I remember RSHD feeling like the craziest thing ever at the time), overdue community building support and so on. For me the "decline" started shortly into the sixth-age stuff, which is a shame because it initially had so much promise, with The World Wakes quest being an absolute blast of an introduction. I did log in a few months ago to RS3 despite not having played the game consistently in a few years and I could barely recall what half the items in my bank did, haha. There is absolutely a feeling of feature creep and information overload.

Also, I think the game looks a lot worse now than it did before skins and whatnot. I preferred the more "grounded", medieval fantasy look pre-2013.

If someone has never played Old School Runescape, I think they should try the game at least once. I think by the end of the tutorial you'll know if it's something that interests you or not, and hey, that's free.

I had a great time with OSRS, but I had to stop eventually, I just knew it would continue to consume my hours and I would have nothing to show for it in the end, especially if I did some of the insane late level grinds. Asked CS to delete my character because I figured I wouldn't be strong enough to stay away. :P

My swan song was Dragon Quest 2, saw it as a fitting end. Great quest and great final boss. I knew I overly researched it because I didn't die despite being worried the entire quest that I would.

Going into the Mythic Guild was awesome and reminded me of going into the Legends Guild for the first time. I was also bittersweet that I finally had a place to kill Green Dragons in peace but knew that I would stop playing soon.

Though I will always regret that I didn't do Fight Caves...

Overall with Runescape 2 and OSRS I think I reached like 18,000 hours played. If I could, I would tell my past self to use that time to learn an instrument or language instead lol. Oh well, least I type quickly now!

This is "Old School" Runescape?? This is a heck of a lot newer looking than the game I played endlessly back in the day.
My best moment was collecting like 20 "Easter Eggs" dropped in the woods back in the day. I later dropped them all at a drop party back before I quit. I never quite hit party hat rich though.
