Microsoft reportedly sending e-mails to lapsed Xbox console users to sell their consoles to Best Buy
Xbox 向久未使用主机用户发邮件,鼓励将主机卖给 Best Buy 换最高 $375 回款。论坛截图显示 Series S 折抵最高 $200,邮件引文提及已转向 XBOX on PC 的玩家。
don't think I've ever seen anything like this before...
XBOX sent me an email encouraging me to sell my console because I haven't used it in awhile
"Haven't played on your console in a while? If you've moved on to XBOX on PC or another way to play XBOX games, it may be time to trade in your console to Best Buy for up to $375 back."

This is kinda crazy? I have never seen any company encourage selling their products to a third party retailer.

picross or it didn't happen
Gotta get those sweet "Certified Refurbished" markups.
It's a bold strategy, Cotton...
They are hoping for some extra GTA6 revenue.

Lmao, well I guess it makes sense. If you're not using the system then you're not spending money in their ecosystem.
Now this is good marketing
So they think the Best Buy partnership deal is worth more than encouraging retention to keep people in the ecosystem.
That is grim

yeah cuz they can markup in resale and earn more money
I think at this point it's fair to assume that there's absolutely no plan whatsoever inside Xbox/Microsoft. They're just doing whatever.
I dont think its that crazy. Best Buy is a big Microsoft partner and easier to convince someone to bring it in to a store than go thru Microsoft. Best Buy gets foot traffic and credit
Lmao, well I guess it makes sense. If you're not using the system then you're not spending money in their ecosystem.
Yeah, makes perfect sense to me.
I honestly kinda get it. Components are expensive as hell right now. They aren't making any money from an unused Xbox on someone's shelf, but a potential new engaged customer is actually worth more to them, and if encouraging people to trade a system in makes inventory available to a new customer, it makes sense.
Weird optics though.
They are hoping for some extra GTA6 revenue.
My guess too, they are probably getting a cut out of the refurb units Best Buy sells + games sales. A refurb xbox series X right now is about 650$
It makes sense.
My Xbox is completely unused. Hardware costs are high. If I sell it it might go to someone else for a more affordable price, and they might actually buy Xbox games
A brand new Series X cost $800. Having more cheaper used units available would help MS.
LOL I got that email earlier today.
I was wondering if it was because I hadn't turned on my system or logged in for a long time.
But no, Microsoft. I'm not giving Best Buy my system (that I admittedly don't use) for a $375 gift card.
Give me cold, hard CASH.
Encourage people not using consoles to get money. Good idea.
Consoles then purchased at lower cost for people who want to use it. Good idea.
Sell games. Good idea.
This is a pretty good idea I think.
That isnt even a good trade in deal.
So they think the Best Buy partnership deal is worth more than keeping people in the ecosystem.

Someone with a console collecting dust in their closet is not really "in the ecosystem." Putting it in the hands of someone else gets them into the ecosystem, or at least keeps someone there who is actively spending money.
Hmm maybe I should consider doing this and get a switch 2. My series x is very old, and could fail while a new system would be more reliable.
I mean it's very dumb but better to attempt to get them in people's hands that will sign up for Game Pass and buy GTA and whatnot.
Can get probably get a good bit more than that if you sell it yourself. Gonna try to do just that in a couple weeks, ride the GTA hype on FB Marketplace lol
The future nº1 gaming company lads.
got this email on one of my sub-accounts that I haven't used in a year
wild optics though
How much are they offering for a Series S. Curious if its more than what I originally paid for it.
I got nothing folks lol. I guess that's one way to get some stock out there

I can only speak for my area near a small city, but far from a "major" locale. Series X have consistently stayed around a selling price of $350-$400 on FB Marketplace.
Lately folks have been trying to get around $500 for them, but none of the "sold" listings suggest people want that price for just the console.
This isnt your Grandma Wii console - its very unlikely that a person that own a Series X in the US has no idea about its current trade in value.
Also US is their strongest market, feels like a weird move.
Hmm maybe I should consider doing this and get a switch 2. My series x is very old, and could fail while a new system would be more reliable.
Series X is a very reliable console.
Switch 2 can still be bought for a somewhat normal price, meanwhile getting another Xbox or PS in the future will always be very expensive.

Its in the OP screenshot, up to 200.
Please make me an offer on my one x. It's sitting in a box in the basement and it's not worth enough to bother listing it on marketplace
I like it. Microsoft wants the consoles collecting dust in circulation.
I assume it's probably sold out everywhere as well based on what I've heard and seen.. so it makes a lot of sense for them to try and get more on the market and maybe find buyers who will more actively spend money. Seems like a pretty smart plan to me and that's enough money to be enticing for lots of people.
This seems like a decent idea? If you aren't going to play it anymore you may not be aware of how much you can get currently, and it gets consoles cycling back around to someone who presumably wouldn't to spend more money in their ecosystem. If hardware wasn't so fucked this probably doesn't happen, but encouraging "cheap"'ways for more customers to get consoles at this point seems like a good plan.
They've not given a shit about "optics" for a while now lmao
Bad optics but it makes sense.
I don't think it'll meaningfully help them but I understand them wanting active users instead of inactive ones especially before gta 6.
"if your console is gathering dust please sell it and get out of our ecosystem" is a fascinating marketing decision
That's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen from game companies!
That's actually a smart idea, lol. Console prices are so fucked that yeah, I get it.
I like it. Microsoft wants the consoles collecting dust in circulation.
The next time I see someone post "my console is collecting dust" I'm going to ask did they get an email from the console manufacture asking them to trade it in.
I got this email, but I already sold my Series X about 10 month ago so it's not being wasted. I got $500.
I know this isn't the intent but the Twitter being Nintdeal is very funny.
"if your console is gathering dust please sell it and get out of our ecosystem" is a fascinating marketing decision
"We arent meeting your needs as a platform? Fine, leave" yeah I dont get it either
I guess that deal with retailers is more expensive than the potentiality of reactivating you as a customer.
Weird, but honestly makes sense.
375$ doesn't sound like a lot. Gamestop sometimes has trade-in promos, and you'd probably get more for your console in those situations.
