Final Fantasy Resonance

Based on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, it features three protagonists: Rain, Lasswell, and Fina. However, it has been completely reworked to deliver a proper RPG experience.

The small areas of the original smartphone version have been expanded to include large cities, dungeons, and a classic world map. In terms of the basic plot, the villain has destroyed the Earth Crystal and now intends to destroy the world’s other powerful crystals as well, but the trio are determined to stop him. They travel on foot, on the back of a chocobo and aboard an airship.

Completing the main story is estimated to take up to 30/40 hours, but there is much more to discover beyond that. However, the story is rather predictable; there are some pacing issues, and the character development doesn't quite measure up to that of the series' major instalments, which feature impressive-looking cutscenes and voiced characters (though not all dialogue is voiced). It's not clear whether this is due to the fact that it's based on a mobile version, but the game could have gone into greater depth here.

The combat is much better and more gripping, particularly if not playing on the standard difficulty setting. The game still features turn-based battles, but with a modern twist. There are six character roles in the game: Commando, Medic, Sentinel, Breaker, Synergist and Saboteur. Each role brings distinct strengths to the party. Parties can consist of up to four members, and there are eight playable characters in total. The flexible character customisation system via Visions (similar to the Job System) allows players to create a wide variety of complex character builds.

These Visions grant the wearer new abilities, passive bonuses, and powerful special attacks. Visions are crystallised essences or echoes of characters. As well as conventional Visions, there are Echoes of iconic Final Fantasy heroes that can be found throughout the world. These include classic characters such as Cloud, Tidus, the Warrior of Light, Terra and Clive, showing that Final Fantasy Resonance also pays homage to other games in the series. These Visions can also be upgraded, enabling the main characters to specialise in surprising detail. But managing these visions could be a little easier. Overall, the game design is quite old-school, which is probably intentional, and random encounters in the overworld and dungeons are a bit too frequent.

Apart from the fact that the attack sequence is clearly visualised, there is also a stagger bar in addition to the HP bar. Each attack has a damage and stagger rating, and hitting an enemy’s weak point reduces the stagger rating even further. Once an enemy is staggered, they become particularly vulnerable to powerful attacks. Visions can also unleash powerful attacks or bonus effects. Additionally, there are Espers who can fight alongside the player for a few rounds.

The world is full of secrets, including a wandering swordsman named Gilgamesh; a Colosseum filled with monsters and valuable prizes; a Chamber of Arms where enemies are sealed inside weapons; and a final battle with the Ultima Weapon.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on PC, PlayStation 5, Switch 1/2 and Xbox Series X|S on 22 October 2026. It is priced at $49.99/€49.99 on PC and $59.99/€59.99 on consoles. There is also a Digital Deluxe Edition, priced at €10 more, which includes the base game along with the Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack. This pack contains an item that transforms the chocobo's appearance into magitek armour, an item exclusive to this pack that unlocks a certain character's Final Meteor Limit Break, and useful items to aid at the start of the journey.

Conclusion

Final Fantasy Resonance is a visually impressive HD-2D reimagining of Brave Exvius, boasting a tactical combat system and in-depth character customisation. Although the story and character development could be stronger, this JRPG pays homage to the traditions of the series.

Features

  • Traditional JRPG with superb HD-2D graphics
  • Good turn-based combat system and plenty of tactical options thanks to the visions
  • Tribute to the entire Final Fantasy series
