If you think the current GPU prices are bad, then you should take a look at the retail listings of the NVIDIA RTX 50 series in Japan. While GPUs are usually more expensive in the country than in NA, the recent price hikes have made GPUs almost unaffordable. Even the 60-class cards in the region have now started selling for around $750, while higher-end models have already crossed the $2,000 mark.
We aren't talking about the GeForce RTX 5090, as the GPU has been discontinued. It's the GeForce RTX 5080 that launched at $999 (around US$1260 in Japan), but now sells for over $1500 in most regions. In Japan, the pricing is even worse, and now the GPU sells for over $2,000. The Redditor u/Chaise91 took a pic of the retail listing of the RTX 50 series models from a Tokyo store and shared it in the PCMasterRace sub-Reddit.
Here we are seeing the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB retailing at 118,800 Yen, which is equivalent to US$749. The GPU launched at around 75,000 Yen last year, which is about US$472. So, the current retail pricing marks a staggering 63% rise. Then we have the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB that launched at 85,000 Yen, or US$530, but now it sells in the 139,800- 205,000 Yen range, which is about US$881-$1292.
The RTX 5070 saw a smaller price hike compared to the RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB, and surprisingly sells in a similar price range of 145,800- 198,800 Yen or US$914- $1253. We have seen a similar trend in other regions as well, so this seems pretty common with higher VRAM GPUs. Lastly, we have the RTX 5080 selling for in the $1864- $2444 range, marking a staggering 48%- 94% price hike in a year.
