Runescape Reignited's cancellation is the right move, despite my own hype

Less than two weeks after it was announced, Runescape Reignited has been officially canceled by developer Jagex. Described as a "relaunch of the game we all love," it would have introduced a new, separate economy for players who wanted to start from scratch as if the MMORPG was released for the first time today. As someone who's mostly watched from the outside, I was actually quite excited for the prospect of kicking off an adventure alongside fellow fresh starters. As sad as I am to see the project canned, however, it was absolutely the right move.
Runescape's Associate Creative Director Ryan Philpott, known as 'Mod Ryan' to the community, confirms that Jagex made the decision to cancel Runescape Reignited after listening to the community response. The new twist was announced during the recent Runefest 2026 festival alongside a big roadmap for both the modern game and OSRS, and the reveal that the studio was working on a new MMO tentatively described as Runescape 4. Philpott thanks the community for "all the feedback since the announcement."
"We truly appreciate everyone sharing their views," Philpott continues. "It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever, and it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited."

What went wrong? Reignited sounds great from the outside, but it created a massive rift in the community. The big frustration came from existing players who have stuck with the game in recent years, who felt they were being left out in the cold. The choice became to leave all your efforts and unlocks behind and join the ranks of the fresh starters, or stay in the current version of Runescape and face a gradual slow demise, caused by Reignited siphoning any potential newcomers into an entirely separate economy.
"It is clear that we missed the mark," Philpott says, explaining, "Our goal is to see Runescape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of our existing community." That's doubly important because Runescape 3 (to give it the full name no-one really uses) has been on a notable upwards trend of late, thanks to what the developer has dubbed its "Road to Restoration."
Over the past year, Jagex has killed Runescape's controversial Treasure Hunter system, admitting the microtransaction-driven feature "eroded integrity." It moved away from Auras to let players breathe easy without worrying about wasting time if you aren't logging in each day and making the most of limited bonuses. Following those changes, it implemented a fresh combat overhaul, then deployed a visual upgrade, and most recently improved player housing.

Reignited aside, the rest of the Runescape roadmap revealed at Runefest is sounding great. Three major story arcs are coming over the course of the next year, including a sequel to the Dragon Slayer questline, and a journey into the City of Gnomes. There's the arrival of Grandmaster Clue Scrolls, a community skilling boss, and an upcoming raid, not to mention all manner of other continued improvements.
The future for Runescape 3 players is a bright one, and there's a general consensus, even among the noise regarding Reignited, that all of Jagex's other announcements are exciting. As such, it's absolutely not the time to suddenly introduce a separate economy that feels as though it's throwing all those eager veteran players under the bus in an attempt to bring in newcomers, even if it leaves those potential players disappointed. Philpott admits it "overshadowed what we believe is one of the best roadmap reveals in memory."
There will still be reasons to start. Speaking to those who might have been tempted by Reignited, Philpott says, "I personally would like to reach out and maintain that invitation. Despite these changes to the plans, I truly believe that December remains a fantastic time to start or continue your journey in Runescape."

He points to features such as the new Adventure Guide, designed to make onboarding smoother, and the first part of the Remastered Journey, both of which are set for December 2. Alongside this will be the ten-day free trial, which will still take place despite the removal of Reignited. Additionally, Runescape plugin support begins on Monday October 19, offering more ways than ever to customize how you play - expect more details on this when it arrives.
The Runescape free trial will take place from Wednesday December 2 until Saturday December 12. All new characters will be eligible, as will any existing accounts that have not held membership since at least June 2, 2026. You'll be able to freely access all modern Runescape Members worlds and content (but not OSRS) during this period.
"If you've been waiting for the perfect time to get your friends to give Runescape a try, this will be it," Philpott asserts. "No split worlds. Just you, me, and the many players coming in, playing the game we all love, together."
