Star Fox recently received a free update on Nintendo Switch 2 with brand-new multiplayer content. The patch fixes one of the game’s flaws – its battle mode was lacking different stages. Indeed, only Corneria, Fichina, and Sector Y were available on launch, and while they were fun to play, I was definitely left wanting more.

Three new stages have been added to battle mode: Katina, Sector X, and Venom. After trying them out, we can say that they’re all really good stages. There’s now a great variety of levels available to play, as well as some other changes we’ll go in-depth on here.

Star Fox battle mode

Before we get to the new stages, Star Fox’s update has added two new items: the Autoturret and the Multiblaster. It’s also added two new profile icons that you can earn by getting 20 takedowns with each item in battle mode – you can obtain these icons against bots or against real players online.

The Autoturret places a turret that stays in place and shoots down nearby enemies, making it strong if you place one within or near an objective. The Multiblaster doesn’t seem very good, to be honest – it shoots a bunch of laser beams in different directions, but it’s very easy to dodge and almost never gets takedowns – at least in my experience. The game has also added two more profile achievements: getting the Team MVP accolade 100 times (only in online matchmaking) and completing a normal or expert run of campaign mode with 1,750 hits or more.

As for the new levels, let’s start with Katina. For this one, several satellites are in orbit that periodically open up zones that you can fly into to establish control. Once a team flies into a zone for long enough, they “win” the zone and activate a laser that fires on their opponents. So not only do you earn points that way, but you weaken your enemies as well.

Sector X might be my favorite. Periodically, a Warp Forge appears and starts generating asteroids, and you have to shoot them all down. You’ll earn points for each one, and I find destroying multiple asteroids to be pretty satisfying! The Warp Forge itself attacks you, as well, so it’s not quite a cakewalk either.

Finally, there’s Venom, which features a huge structure in the center of the map. Areas will come online that you have to fly into – that way you can “scan the data within” – and if your team flies inside the zone for long enough, you earn extra points. The premise of each map is simple, but the highlight is the battles with other players. If you’re new to the game, you’ll probably be taken down in a few seconds, but once you practice, you realize there are very solid defensive countermeasures you can take. You can’t spam barrel rolls, for instance, but you can time them very well to repel fire for a brief moment. You can perform U-turns and somersaults to shake enemies, and you can avoid combat entirely until you get enough upgrades to be able to take enemies down.

What started off as a relatively niche side mode has potential to be a multiplayer mainstay on Nintendo Switch 2. The achievements will keep you coming back for a good while, and even once you get them all, it’s still fun to fire up an online match once in a blue moon.
