A New Belmont Takes Up The Vampire Killer

The year is 1499, and Paris has become a battleground as monstrous creatures emerge from the shadows beneath a looming mystical castle. Trevor Belmont, the legendary hunter who defeated Dracula, ventures into the burning city with his daughter, Rose. But when Rose is caught up in a dark conspiracy, it’s up to her to take the fight to the creatures threatening to overwhelm the city.

Set 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Belmont’s Curse introduces a new chapter in the family’s long-running war against the forces of darkness. You don’t need to have followed every previous instalment of the Castlevania franchise to understand the basic stakes, though longtime fans should find plenty to appreciate in the return to familiar Gothic territory.

The iconic Vampire Killer whip remains central to the action, but it isn’t just a weapon for keeping enemies at a distance. Rose can use it to swing through the environment, moving with the flair of a trapeze artist before launching into fast-paced combat. Exploration also plays a major role, with hidden secrets, upgrades and new areas waiting beyond the most obvious routes.

Crack The Whip, Collect Arcana And Build Your Fighting Style

Combat isn’t limited to cracking the whip at anything that moves. Rose can equip weapons from seven different categories, while Relics provide additional offensive and defensive effects. Finding combinations that suit your approach should be a key part of preparing for the challenges ahead.

The boss roster includes familiar names such as Death, Medusa and Carmilla, alongside new threats including Joan of Arc. Defeating these formidable opponents allows Rose to seal them into tarot cards, transforming them into Arcana. These cards grant special skills, spells and unique actions that can be used during the adventure.

It’s an intriguing addition to the traditional Castlevania arsenal, giving players another way to shape their combat style as they progress. Combined with the whip’s movement abilities and the range of equipment available, there’s more to mastering Rose than simply charging into every fight.

The presentation also looks to balance nostalgia with a fresh visual identity. Classic Gothic influences return alongside more vivid, refined environments, while a soundtrack composed by Daniel ASADI accompanies Rose’s journey through Paris and the castle.

Standard Or Midnight Edition – Which Should You Choose?

Konami has two editions available, with the more expensive option bundling in digital extras for those who want a little more from their purchase.

  • Standard Edition – £24.98: Includes the full game.
  • Midnight Edition – £34.99: Includes the full game, a Digital Sound & Art Gallery, the Trevor Style Costume, the Sypha Style Costume and the Family’s Grace Relic.

The Belmont Legacy Continues

With a new protagonist, a burning Parisian setting and an emphasis on exploration alongside its trademark combat, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse gives the series another opportunity to put its Gothic world to work. The whip-swinging movement and boss-derived Arcana abilities also offer some interesting ways to approach its battles.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is out now on Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, starting at £24.98 from the Xbox Store, with Play Anywhere support. Whether you’re returning for another dose of vampire-hunting action or meeting the Belmont family for the first time, Rose has a city to save and a castle full of horrors to face.
