Persona 4 Revival's Release Date Makes Its Switch 2 Delay Hurt Even More

Persona 4 Revival, a remake of the classic JPRG in line with 2024's Persona 3 Reload, is scheduled for a release in February 2027. For better or worse, this is right around the corner, and RPG fans are rightly excited. RPG fans that don't main the Nintendo Switch 2, at least.
Like its predecessors, Persona 4 Revival is set in a magical realism world evocative of the works of Haruki Murakami and Jorge Luis Borges: a mysterious "Midnight Channel" has begun broadcasting in a rural Japanese town, causing inexplicable deaths and a slew of hostile creatures called "Shadows." Naturally, it's up to a squad of intrepid, Persona-wielding teenagers to solve the mysteries of this Channel and put an end to the enigmatic killings. For the player, this boils down to turn-based combat, dungeon-crawling, and social sim loops, which often gel nicely with a handheld console. We were reminded of this positive synergy by Persona 3 Reload which, despite undeniable popularity upon its February 2024 launch, didn't make it to the Switch 2 until October 2025, skipping the less-powerful Switch 1 altogether.
Metaphor: ReFantazio, another well-received Atlus RPG, has also suffered from a staggered Switch 2 launch, with the port slated to release in November 2026.
Why Persona 4 Revival's Switch 2 Delay Is a Bummer

- Persona 4 Revival PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC release date: February 18, 2027
- Persona 4 Revival Nintendo Switch 2 release date: May 20, 2027
I would certainly hesitate to call Persona 4 Revival's later Switch 2 release date devastating, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't disappointing. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the Nintendo Switch lagged behind its competitors by several objective metrics, and its runaway success feels almost like a fluke because of it. The same can be said of its successor console, which, despite enjoying similarly monumental success, runs the risk of repeating history, having its users be treated like second-class citizens by the rest of the games industry.

Put the consoles in the correct order.
We often think of the Nintendo Switch's downsides as being spec-related, but broader support was a problem too. Take Hogwarts Legacy, an incredibly popular, mainstream, AAA game that was brought to the Nintendo Switch more than 1.5 years after its global launch. Not only was Hogwarts Legacy on Switch severely graphically compromised, it also had to alter certain elements of its design, segmenting its seamless open-world with jarring loading screens. To receive an inferior product after such a long wait was certainly frustrating.

We're starting to see this again, albeit to a lesser extent. The well-reviewed 007 First Light has had its Switch 2 launch delayed, and now there's this Persona 4 Revival release strategy. I would actually argue that the Persona 4 Switch 2 delay is more disheartening than the 007 First Light situation. First Light is a high-fidelity, blockbuster AAA stealth shooter, whereas Persona 4 Revival is a far more graphically and technically conservative title, not too far removed from Persona 5 Royal, a game that was released on the original Nintendo Switch back in 2022. You wouldn't expect the Switch 2's hardware to pose any major issues for Atlus.
Then there's the fact that the Persona formula works exceptionally well on a handheld/hybrid. The combination of compartmentalized in-game days and simple, repetitive tasks makes Persona games a great fit for the pick-up-and-play nature of a portable device, similar to how games like Stardew Valley are a natural match for such devices. The Nintendo Switch 2 is the most popular handheld console on the market, so it feels like Atlus is missing a significant day-one opportunity with Persona 4 Revival.
Hopefully, Persona 4 Revival Will Be Among the Last Major Switch 2 Release Delays
It's likely that the delay of Persona 4 Revival on Switch 2 is the result of the console's age relative to its competitors. Switch 2 development kits, which studios need in order to make reliable ports for the system, have obviously been around for much less time than those for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the various nuances of a given platform can take years for developers to fully figure out. These are the reasons commonly cited for delays like 007 First Light, as well as the subpar performance of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition pre-launch.
But as the Switch 2 gets older, these issues should theoretically start to fade away. There's already cause for optimism here—the three-month gap between Persona 4 Revival's global and Switch 2 launches is a great improvement over previous releases, such as Persona 3 Reload. Given how Nintendo has seemingly struck gold once again with the Switch 2, it only makes sense for third-party developers to start taking the console a bit more seriously, and not view it as a lower priority than its Sony and Microsoft counterparts.
