Deadlock’s new hero Solomon has a hidden detail that has chess fans impressed, with the pieces on his board rearranging into positions from famous games every time he reloads.
Solomon is a floating chess grandmaster added in Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps update, one of six new heroes being released one at a time through player votes. He fights by launching pieces off his board, and can summon giant versions of a rook, knight, bishop and queen that move across the battlefield like their real chess counterparts.
His kit encourages players to hang back in team fights, positioning his giant pieces across the battlefield and controlling the fight much like a game of chess.
The board in his hands doubles as his ammo counter. Each piece on it represents a bullet, so when he reloads, the board resets with as many pieces as his magazine holds.
That number isn’t fixed. Players can increase Solomon’s ammo by buying certain items, or by collecting buffs in the form smashable golden book cabinets that spawn around the map. Each time it changes, the board shows a different layout, ranging from 8 pieces up to a full set of 32.
The Deadlock News fan account worked through every version and matched almost all of them to well-known positions from chess history.
All variations of Solomon's chessboard!
After reloading, the pieces on the new character's board rearrange into a new layout based on his remaining ammo count. Every position is taken from an actual historical game.

The list spans more than 170 years of chess history, from the 1851 “Immortal Game” between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky to Game 6 of Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand’s 2014 World Championship match.
It also includes some moments chess fans online will know well. With 10 pieces, the board shows a 2024 game played by Levy Rozman, better known as GothamChess, while a full board of 32 shows the infamous double Bongcloud opening played by Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura in 2021.
A handful aren’t real games at all. Some show classic traps like Scholar’s Mate, a checkmate in four moves, and Légal’s Mate, a queen sacrifice trap.
