Raptor Lake And Zen 4
Intel's Raptor Lake and AMD's Zen 4 are both on approach for a landing this fall. It's shaping up to be an epic battle between the CPU heavyweights, as Intel looks to add more efficiency cores and multi-threaded performance while AMD will launch an all-new platform, with socket AM5 being the first new socket in over five years.

The fact that it's taken them this long, to allegedly take it seriously, does not inspire confidence.
tbh if it is even half true it will finally be usable.
the amount of time it takes to update/open/change pages is disgusting atm and anything will make just using it better.
I gave up on Epic entirely after having nothing but trouble running GTA V. At first, I had to log in with my admin credentials just to be able to play - after logging out - on my standard account. Eventually, I couldn't play it at all, and neither repairing nor reinstalling the game helped.
Faster load times are nice, but adding more cruft like user-reviews, algorithmic recommendations, and yet another controller API? No thankyou, turning a simple store into another bloated mess like Steam is not a good move.
Good for them and the people who use them but I'll still be avoiding their launcher like the plague.
Linux support?
probably a yes, as indicated by Epic's job listings. They're looking for engineers who can bring kernel anti-cheat into Linux for Fortnite.
Sorry but no thanks. Epic is awful. They have a LONG way to go to be even close to Steam. With Steam, i can copy the game folder to another computer and it will just work. Or put them on an external drive and use them between my desktop and laptop or any other computer. With Epic you have to download it every single place. It's so locked down it's dumb.
As a steam enjoyer I have absolutely no problem with more / better competition. Valve is always made out to be the bad guys because they control a huge portion of the market but the fact of the matter is and always has been that the competition has sucked.

Indeed. While it is nice to have a hub to install games you've paid for and launch them, most of these launchers get bloated. If they all gobble up half a gig of RAM like Steam and everyone wants or requires you run them to play their games pretty soon we all need more RAM. Wait, isn't RAM really expensive now?
Sometimes I feel like I've sold my soul for the convenience they offer and think I was better off going to websites and downloading the game in the good ol' days. I can't think of a single launcher I completely like and I don't want any of them running all the time either.

Wow.
First I'd heard about this job posting. Thank you for sharing.
Took them how many years to add user reviews? At this rate, maybe they'll be able to compete with steam in a decade or two.

Here's a secret: the 'launcher' is the OS. The 'platform' is the OS. Steam. Epic Store, etc, are just shops and an installer delivery system - once the game is installed on your PC, they have no reason to be running at all.
Six times faster because it has around 6 times less stuff useful for consumers.
HAH.
Regards.
There is a big difference between EPIC and STEAM (Valve): One is American owned and the other is controlled by the Chinese Government. 👁️🗨️
This is like putting a band-aid on a severely hemorrhaging wound.
about time honestly. their launcher was embarassing. but they better fix the game updating. maybe they are using the worlds best compression or whatever but the reality is your computer lags so bad during updating that I stopped using it. steam and battle.net are way less stressful on your computer when updating. maybe epic has fixed it (haven't used their launcher in years because it's so bad), but I remember it was awful.

What are you running on, 4 GB of RAM? That's nothing compared to other applications. Things like Discord and web browsers easily consume around 2 GB alone, if not more. Hell, Waterfox uses around 6 GB for me, but that's partially my fault for offloading my browser profile to RAM for faster loading. This is such a non-issue on modern systems, though, and if you have less than 16 GB, I don't even know why you're bothering to play PC games made within the past 10 years.

I couldn't disagree more. My main gripe with Epic is the lack of universal controller support. It's always irritated me to no end when I'd buy a game on EGS then immediately have to fire up Steamer and add it to my library there to get a freaking controller to work with the title.

User reviews on steam are typically useless anyway
I'm baffled by the love people show Steam everywhere? All Steam does for me is use about 40% of my CPU after I try and close it. Every. Damn. Time. If I forget to immediately go into task manager to kill the process immediately after exiting you can be sure that in an hour or two I'll be wondering why my room is 5° hotter than anywhere else in the house.
I'd never open Steam again if I didn't need it to have controller support in literally every game I've bought for the past 10 years. If Epic can just fix that for the I've bought on their store I'll be thrilled.

Just because you have a PC issue doesn't mean that other people have to hate steam, steam uses 0.2% of CPU on my system....if it's open and I look at the web based adds it's like 5-6%
If you have 40% CPU usage you either have an ancient system that has no business running steam in the first place or you have an issue with your system.

The OS provides 'universal controller support' (e.g. Directinput, or Xinput if all you have ais a basic handheld controller). You need to load the game to assign inputs anyway, so some shop's proprietary middleman serves no purpose other than vendor lock-in.
IMHO the only way epic will become a serious rival to steam is if they added discussions pages to games like they do on steam.
I only have 5 games on epic as apposed to over 100 on steam and this is because if you go into a steam discussion page and ask a question about a game some trollers will say go figure it out for yourself.
The reason they sometimes do that is because if you dont have the game in question or if you bought it somewhere else you wont have a mouse icon next to your name.
