I was originally worried that I wouldn't have a lot to say about #I’m Looking For a Zombie because most zombie apocalypse stories are pretty much the same. When humanity is pushed to the brink of extinction, there's a lot of dark themes to play with, like the risk of losing your humanity or trying to make the most of a broken-down world. I like how the show is keeping up a little air of mystery regarding the main cast and where they're from. This is supposedly decades into an already established zombie apocalypse where the cast was raised to be wary of the outside world in a sheltered village. There's even a lot of typical conventional things that they don't know a lot about, like certain foods or malls. The characters are very goofy, but there is an underlying sadness to some of the stuff that they talk about, and there is something to be said about how them going out recklessly fighting zombies is probably the first time that they've ever actually lived exciting lives

That can be a very profound story, especially if the show isn't afraid to get really dark with portraying its hopelessness, as the end of episode two has shown. The biggest problem with #I’m Looking For a Zombie is that I genuinely don't know what tone it's trying to go for. While the implied background of the cast is dark and some scenes feel like they're trying to speak to me on a human level, most of the episodes and character interactions are so goofy that I feel like this is supposed to be a dark comedy. No one seemingly takes anything seriously, with a lot of loose gags and over-the-top reactions being paired with very subpar, muddy animation when it comes to the actual zombie fights. Even the voice acting feels a little directionless in both versions, like the actors were told to bring the type of energy that you would expect in a slice-of-life comedy and not a dark zombie apocalypse series.

The show might be going for a type of juxtaposition with its execution. Sometimes this can work well, like the running gag with Aki's father. The fact that she checks every zombie that she kills to see if it's her dad because her dad joyfully made her promise to put an end to him if he ever became a zombie is funny but also really sad when it's brought to her attention that he might actually be alive out there. That works because it's matching comedy with a sense of hopefulness. Madeline Dorroh does a really good job of selling that scene in the dub. But then I get to the end of episode three, where a character gets their arm cut off tragically and dramatically right after the scene where a little girl was yelling profanity while shooting zombies. I was caught off guard that I was suddenly asked to care about something that I didn't think I would need to care about given everything else that had happened prior. Now the end of episode three does mark a definitive event that shouldn't be able to get undone easily, and I'm looking forward to seeing how episode four will delve into that. But I really hope this show has a solid idea of what it wants to be, and I'm just slow on the uptake cause otherwise, I feel like I'm going to spend most of this series being confused.
