从棋盘游戏到奖励轮盘:为何转盘从未过时
From Board Games to Bonus Wheels: Why Spinning a Wheel Never Gets Old
转盘机制从1960年《The Game of Life》棋盘游戏到2019年《GTA Online》Lucky Wheel经久不衰,因其制造近失误体验并刺激大脑纹状体与脑岛活动。Rockstar于2019年7月23日在PlayStation平台推出每日免费转轮,给予玩家每日登录理由;同年《Borderlands 3》赌场扩展也沿用该设计。
From a plastic spinner in 1960 to the Lucky Wheel in GTA Online, the format has barely changed in over 60 years. Players will still stop whatever they’re doing to watch the pointer slow down.
Spinners and wheels predate every console Sony has released.
They’ve turned up on board game tables and network TV over the decades, and since 2019 there’s been one in the lobby of a Los Santos casino too. Somebody spins. Then the clicking slows and nobody says a word. It lasts a second or two, maybe three.
Online casinos picked up on this years ago, and bonus wheels and live wheel games hosted by real presenters are now standard at platforms for Australian and New Zealand players, including SpinBet Casino at https://spinbetcasino.com/, which lists 5,000+ casino titles next to a separate sportsbook. Below is a look at how the wheel went from cardboard to crypto-friendly casino lobbies, and why gamers still can’t look away from it.
A Spinner Instead of Dice
Milton Bradley needed a big release for its 100th anniversary in 1960. Toy inventor Reuben Klamer went digging in the company archives and found its very first board game, The Checkered Game of Life from 1860. He reworked it into The Game of Life.
Hasbro’s 50th-anniversary press release describes a three-dimensional board with a winding track and a spinner that did away with dice altogether.
It sounds like a minor swap. It wasn’t, though. Dice tumble and stop in a blink, while a spinner gives everyone at the table a few seconds of watching the pointer tick past numbers before it settles, and these few seconds are where the tension lives.
Klamer’s game eventually turned up in 59 countries with editions in 26 languages, per Hasbro’s figures. The original box cost $6 and featured TV host Art Linkletter’s endorsement, which is less than a basic Fortnite skin costs in 2026.
When Television Got Its Wheel
Wheel of Fortune premiered on NBC in January 1975 as a Merv Griffin production, and the giant wheel was the star from day one. Contestants spin to set the dollar value of each consonant they call. Every turn has a pause baked in. Viewers at home get to sweat on the result as well, which a word puzzle on its own could never pull off.
Ryan Seacrest took over from Pat Sajak in 2024, and the wheel barely changed.
GTA Online’s Lucky Wheel
PlayStation players got the modern take on July 23, 2019, when Rockstar opened The Diamond Casino & Resort in GTA Online. Its Lucky Wheel gave every casino member one free spin a day. Prizes included GTA$, RP, chips, clothing and a featured podium vehicle that rotated with Rockstar’s weekly updates, and GTA+ subscribers later got a second daily spin.
For a while, YouTube was packed with four-second timing tricks that supposedly locked in the podium car every time. Some players swear by them, plenty of others spent months spinning and came away with a T-shirt and a few thousand RP.
Rockstar’s design logic is easy to read. A free daily spin gives players a reason to log in on nights they’d planned to play another game, and it costs Rockstar nothing. Mobile games had used daily spins for years by then. Even so, seeing one on a PS4 in a big-budget open world felt new.
Gearbox went down a similar road later in 2019 with Borderlands 3’s Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, a casino-themed expansion stuffed with slot machines.
Why the Brain Enjoys the Wait
Science has a fairly clear answer here. A 2009 study published in Neuron, led by Luke Clark at the University of Cambridge, tested how people respond to near-misses on a simplified slot machine.
Volunteers rated near-misses as less pleasant than clear losses. Yet near-misses also boosted their desire to play on, and brain scans found activity in the striatum and insula, two regions that also responded to real wins. Clark’s team found the boost only appeared when volunteers had control over arranging the gamble, an odd wrinkle given how much a physical spin feels like control.
A wheel is basically a near-miss generator, with the pointer crawling past the top prize before it stops one segment short.
Nothing rides on it in a board game. In GTA Online the worst outcome is an unwanted jacket. But real money is a different story, since a near-miss says nothing about the next spin and every result is independent of the one before it.
Each wheel format handles the stakes a little differently:
| Wheel format | Where you’ll find it | What decides the stop | What’s at stake |
| Board game spinner | The Game of Life (1960) | A flick of the hand | Moves on the board |
| TV wheel | Wheel of Fortune (1975) | The contestant’s spin | Cash and prizes for contestants |
| In-game daily wheel | GTA Online Lucky Wheel (2019) | Game code | GTA$, RP, clothing, vehicles |
| Slot bonus wheel | Online slots (pokies in AU/NZ) | Random number generator | Real-money bonus prizes |
| Live money wheel | Presenter-led live casino games | A physical wheel on a live stream | Real-money payouts |
Where SpinBet Casino Fits In
SpinBet Casino is aimed at players in Australia and New Zealand, where slots go by the name pokies. Its lobby lists 5,000+ titles from studios including Pragmatic Play, Hacksaw, Playson and Wazdan, with picks like Gates of Olympus 1000 and Wanted Dead or a Wild.
Away from the slots, there’s a live casino with real dealers plus a full sportsbook for anyone who’d rather bet on sports. Pragmatic Play’s Drops & Wins promotions also feature on the site. Sports bettors get their own welcome bonus too, kept separate from the casino offer, which is handy for anyone who only cares about the weekend’s games.
Promotions go beyond a one-off sign-up offer. New players get a welcome bonus spread over their first deposits. Regulars can claim weekly free spins, reloads, cashback offers and a VIP program topped by the Black Diamond Club. Current terms are listed on SpinBet’s promotions page.
AUD and NZD accounts are supported, and deposits go through Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or crypto, with coins like BTC, ETH, USDT and SOL accepted. Withdrawals are paid by bank transfer or crypto and are generally processed within an hour, with 24/7 live chat on desktop and mobile for anything that goes sideways.
Account settings also include limits:
- Deposit limits cap how much money goes into the account over a set period.
- Set a loss limit to cap the downside.
- With session limits, you decide in advance how long a session can go before it ends.
- Short time-outs offer a break.
- For a longer step back from gambling, self-exclusion is available too.
Still Spinning
Sony’s PlayStation Store currently lists “Gambling” among GTA Online’s content descriptors, right next to violence and in-game purchases. It’s an odd tag for a game where nobody can cash out a single real dollar.
Where the line belongs between a free daily spin in a video game and a paid one at a real casino is a debate nobody has settled. Loot boxes kicked off a similar argument years ago, and it still hasn’t gone away. And with Grand Theft Auto VIarriving in November, expect plenty of chatter about which of these systems Rockstar brings forward to Vice City.
Responsible Gambling Notice
Only adults 18+ should gamble, and it should be treated as entertainment, never as a source of income, so set limits before you play and only spend what you can afford to lose.
