Just stumbled into this video yesterday, watched it in its entirety and loved every minute of it.
Not only is it straight up my alley, talking about less known (and inaccessible due to language) titles in the Playstation 1 library, its also a big reminder of how many "stones" are still unturned out there, for the broader spectrum of fans of the platform.

Yuuyami Doori Tankentai is a horror title developed by Spike, released in 1999, it features a very unique style, almost offbeat, taking into account most known PS1 aesthetic expectations. With a very intricate system of small stories (rumours) weaving the plot together, connecting into broader implications for the protagonists.

Very very creepy in many refreshing ways.

For those that can't really play a game like this, like yours truly, i recommend this video and channel.

A few years back (omg it was 2016) Japanese YouTubers 2bro did a LP of this and I really loved it. Unfortunately the price for a physical copy never really recovered from their LP and now I think now it's at about 250-300 dollars equivalent whenever I see it in the wild.

Kain-Nosgoth

Oh it's the game that's been made by some of the people who worked previously on twilight syndrome, the horror game referenced heavily in danganronpa 2

unasked for ducksplain but there's also a handy-dandy post bookmark feature if you want to save things for reading/watching later without having to set a thread to watch each time.

Oh I'm more interested in the conversation around these lost gems and forget that bookmarks exist

Raspada

Watched this last week, highly recommended. His way of telling the story of the game actually made me really attached to the main characters by the end.

I agree.
This channel was a very nice surprise for me.
His tone, the flow of what he chooses to adress, and how, its all very well made.

RedNine

One of my favorite games ever, anyone that can read Japanese and loves horror games should try it.

The controls are very clunky and it's definitely not an easy game to get into, but there isn't anything else quite like it, even the other games in the same "series" can't really compare.

I saw this uploaded a few days ago and I can't wait to watch it. I love long videos on obscure games like this, i just have not had any free time lately. I've only watched a few Dungeon Chill videos so far, but I plan on watching them all.

This game is one of those that really awakens a will to start learning Japanese, but at the same time, you know you will only start to scratch the surface of understanding on its nuances, way further down the long road of language learning.

Still, never have Hiragana and Katakana looked more like an odd, interesting and unwieldy key to unlock secrets.

Dungeon Chill was one of my absolute favorite discoveries in 2024 and now he's one of my absolute favorite content creators. One of the very few folks I'll gladly watch a 4 hr video of without issue.

Trigger

This was a pretty fantastic watch. Felt like l watched a season of an anime show or something. Really interesting concept for a game.

Dungeon Chill is great. He has covered a fair amount of untranslated Japanese games and on obscure games in general. He is good at picking out interesting stuff to cover.

Foolhardy

I've been making my way through this when I can. Halfway now.

I'm usually allergic to digitized photo sprites but this game in motion is just so damn charming. Which makes the horror elements hit harder of course.

I get all the reasons why it didn't make it out if Japan but damn I wish this had been able to find a wider audience.

He's part of my favorite gaming Youtuber niche of folk that can make me nostalgic for games I never played. Majuular, Ross's Game Dungeon, etc.

Vampyr was another Dungeon Chill episode I watched recently that had me longing for a game that never made it over even as all the problems with it were laid bare. Maybe more longing for the idea of that game.

Looking forward to your thoughts on the most convoluted attempt on Abraham Lincoln's life in gaming history. ;)

Same here, every video has been great so far. I'm gladly contributing to his Patreon.

Always here for Dungeon Chill. I've been going through and watching this one in chunks and it lives up.

Between the videos for this and Twilight Syndrome, I wish someone would try a more updated take on this style of game. In English, so I can enjoy it firsthand.

There's never been a better time to learn. The Japanese language learning community has made so many tools that help you learn the language, especially with video games. Or you can use paid products.

Also thanks for the link to the video. Will definitely check it out.

If anyone follows Punchy, he's currently also making a YouTube video about this game. He was crestfallen (in an amusing way) that this much more in-depth video on a niche title just happened to be released now

Oh I wasn't aware he was planning on covering this game too. I'm definitely excited to see his experience. I love Punchy, he's hilarious and the games he covers are always great. I rewatch his Ancient Roman video on a regular basis just for the laughs.

I really should look into it.

Love Punchy as well, definitely will check out his take when it drops.

There's really so so many "stones" that are still unturned out there when it comes to Japanese media in general, movies, music, games, etc. So much stuff untranslated that we just don't know about, or won't be able to experience, so much stuff that can be considered masterpieces far out of our reach. Makes me kinda depressed when I think about it. If you learn the language, it opens up many experiences for you, but that's obviously not feasible for everyone.

eso76

Heard about this but keep forgetting the name.
I don't think I've ever seen a single screen though ...it look *fantastic*.

Just finished. I was not expecting to be that affected by a second hand horror game experience.

I wasn't ready for that credits music either.

It's one hell of a long shot but I'm yearning for a rerelease just so more people get to experience it.

Learnt about this game from this really cool article: https://www.heterotopiaszine.com/2017/08/02/suburban-decay-yuuyami-doori-tankentai/

It's one of those games that I would like to find a way to experience one day. Picked up a copy just because of how intriguing it is, and so it can sit with the Twilight/Moonlight Syndrome games.

I think that's one of the articles that gets referenced during the video. Dungeon Chill pulls out all the stops trying to unravel this one and calling back to what coverage remains of this game pops up a bit.

I have not managed to watch more than a few minutes of the video, but this game sure is a looker:

It gets even more impressive as the video goes on.

That game took on my most disliked approaches to game visuals and made something undeniably gorgeous out of it. There's just so much life to that world.

I keep thinking about a rerelease but it's so easy to imagine an upscaled nightmare monkey's paw scenario that loses so much nuance.

Found this guy randomly one day.

A good channel to lose a few hours of your day sometimes.

Dash Kappei

I'm still hopeful will see a re-release in the future, time has never been better for these games and an announcement would spark more interest and knowledge that this is a cult game

Ribbon

Dungeon Chill is an exceptional channel. Even if anyone gives this video a shot and doesn't find it their cup of tea I can guarantee that you'll find something else in his catalogue that you'll enjoy.

This was my favorite game I never played until a Discord oomf graciously shared her translation with me. Now it's one of my favorite games ever.

This was a really moving journey to go through, and the video really shows how many cool things are still hidden behind language barriers... though I gotta admit, I'm not a big fan of the game's ending.

I guess that from one perspective Kurumi gets to live a life free from the prejudice that got her poisoned and killed and where she can be with her spirit-pals forever and ever, but the whole game leading up to sacrificing the autistic-coded characters so the neurotypicals can have character development and semi-sorta be thrown together with not a lot of build-up to it (at least not from what we've seen in this video) feels a bit anti-climactic.

Jawmuncher

Watching it right now, really cool how in-depth DC is going in on this game. Especially as it really seems like something that has no chance of ever being translated even by a fan group.

Really unique stuff. Especially liked

Punchy's video about YDT is out.

His comment about Kurumi probably being autistic gave the whole game an even more nuanced layering i wasn't expecting. More details about how the character is presented and how others react to her make much more sense.

Just came across this video and watching it piecemeal now.

This game looks absolutely gorgeous. Never played Twilight Syndrome but I love the take on this style. Judging by some comments this is also bound to be a bit of a gut punch.

This game now has a machine translation.
