Epic Games 用快 46% 的“Vibe-Coded”启动器嘲讽 Steam,但 Valve 的下一更新将启动时间缩短至 5.23 秒

Epic Games Mocked Steam With A 46% Faster “Vibe-Coded” Launcher, But Valve’s Next Update Cut Startup To 5.23 Seconds

Yesterday, a new "vibe-coded" version of the Epic Games Launcher was released in preview, and the company did not miss the chance to make a snarky remark against its direct competitor, highlighting how the new version of the launcher is 46% faster than Steam in a cold start scenario, and 14% faster in a restore from System Tray to Library scenario. Valve did not take this silently, and took up the challenge in the best way possible: making Steam faster.

The latest Steam Client Update, released a few hours ago, delivers a slew of new improvements for Big Picture Mode and tons of fixes, but the most remarkable is the update to the client's startup performance, which likely comes in response to Epic's vibe-coded new launcher. And it's not a minor improvement: a new video shared on X by @girlglock_ shows that the client now starts in 5.23 seconds, down from the 10.07 seconds previously required for it to launch.

As such, Steam is once again faster than its competitor, which is trying everything to steal market share from Valve, an achievement that has always been nearly impossible considering how Steam has become synonymous with PC gaming over the course of the years. No amount of freebies will change the fact that the Epic Games Launcher lacks the features that make Valve's client the best.

As it is unspecified, we have no idea if the new Steam client update hasn't been vibe-coded as the Epic Games Launcher has. If it hasn't, however, this would once again prove how AI could beat manual coding in efficiency (as highlighted by the massive number of new mods and decompilation projects hitting the web in the past few weeks), but definitely not in quality. Hopefully, those going all-in with AI will understand this, but chances are definitely on the slim side.
