Update [Tue 13th Oct 2026, 11am]:

Developer New Old Pixels, in collaboration with publisher Microids, has announced three platforms that will be receiving brand new ports of TAD Corporation's 1989 arcade hit, Toki.

The Toki ports are in development for Sega Mega Drive, Neo Geo, and Commodore Amiga AGA. All three ports are expected to receive fully playable physical releases.

"Our goal is to deliver ports that remain as faithful as possible to the original arcade game, preserving its gameplay, graphics, animations and soundtrack while making the most of each platform's technical capabilities."

"Particular attention will be given to the quality of the conversions, their presentation and packaging, with the ambition of offering retro gaming enthusiasts and collectors editions worthy of this arcade classic." - Benjamin Yoris. New Old Pixels Co-Founder

Toki did receive a Sega Mega Drive port back in 1991, developed in-house, so New Old Pixels is likely looking to recreate the arcade original game in a more authentic fashion for Sega's 16-bit baby.

The Commodore Amiga also had its own port in the early '90s. New Old Pixels' specific reference to "AGA" suggests that its new conversion will take advantage of the 1200 chipset.

Toki is currently in development at New Old Pixels. A release window has not been announced.

Original Story [Sat 3rd Oct 2026, 10am]: Classic gaming purveyor New Old Pixels announced that it has signed a deal with publisher Microids to bring everyone's favourite video game gorilla to a variety of dormant home computer platforms. No, not that one; they mean Toki.

“Toki is exactly the kind of project we created New Old Pixels for: giving retro machines the conversions of great arcade games they never got back in the day.” - Benjamin Yoris. New Old Pixels Founder.

Developed by TAD Corporation, Toki (1989) saw the titular, Tarzan-like hero transformed into an anthropomorphic ape by the wicked Vookimedlo. And as if that wasn't enough, the sinister witch doctor then absconded with Toki's beautiful tribal princess, Miho. Unperturbed by his simian scenario, Toki begins a quest to reach Vookimedlo's golden palace, rescue the girl, and send the evil sorcerer and his bag of curses packing.

Players guide Toki through some (very challenging) jungle environments, defending himself from enemies through the revolting act of saliva production. Whether Vookimedlo afflicted him with this disgusting habit, or whether Toki is just a terrible person, is never explained.

New Old Pixels didn't announce which platforms will receive Toki ports, but does suggest it is aiming for formats that didn't initially get a home release. Toki was easy to come by in the early '90s, having gobbed itself onto the C64, Amiga, Atari ST, NES, and the Atari Lynx. A Mega Drive/Genesis port, developed by Sega itself, changed elements of the original game's storyline but kept the gameplay intact, for the most part.

Amstrad and ZX Spectrum ports were planned, but never emerged - so these might be key formats in New Old Pixels' plans. The publisher is also looking to release physical editions of the new ports for use on original hardware.

More details will be revealed in the coming months. So get out there and stock up on expectorants.
