Xbox Handheld in 2027, $1200+ Console in 2028 per New Report
A ‘next generation’ Xbox Handheld is reportedly set for 2027, with new consoles supposedly coming in 2028.
Misfortune
Fortune has reported, as part of a wide-ranging piece on Asha Sharma, that a ‘next-generation Xbox handheld device’ will launch by the Holiday 2027 season. Alongside that claim is that next-generation Xbox console will launch in holiday 2028. Internal projections reportedly show the new consoles being between $1200 and $1800 US without being subsidized.
The piece covers a wide range of topics, from taking over as a ‘first-time CEO’ to not being a gamer despite the job being so focused on the hobby. While there are multiple quotes from Sharma, it will be interesting to see if there is any explanation on where the source of those hardware dates comes from.
The piece talks about how the focus on the core business, Xbox consoles that make up 80% of it, has heavily shifted back to that core audience. Internal tensions at Microsoft and Xbox go over how the Windows and Xbox teams have argued over the software that will run on the Xbox handheld.
The Windows team wanted a pared down version of, you guessed it, Windows. Xbox wanted to build and control their own software, with the latter seemingly winning out after an internal struggle.
Finally, after once again being asked if Microsoft was looking to sell Xbox. Judson Althoff, of Microsoft responded:
“Asha is one of the best leaders we have at the whole company. We would not have put her on a business we intend to sell. There’s going to be a ton of speculation about all this. Time will tell.”
