The 10 Best NFL Teams That Never Won the Super Bowl

AI 导读

榜单排出从未赢得 Super Bowl 的 10 支最佳 NFL 球队,2007 New England Patriots 以常规赛 16 胜 0 负、得 589 分居首。

正文

The 2007 New England Patriots are the best single season NFL team that did not win the Super Bowl. The 1998 Minnesota Vikings are my best alternative among teams that fell in a conference championship rather than the Super Bowl itself.

This ranking covers great individual seasons that ended without a championship. It does not mean every franchise listed has never won a Super Bowl in another year.

I ranked the teams by regular season dominance, point differential, star power, postseason performance, and how close each came to finishing the job. This preserves the original 10 season field while correcting the quarterback, year, and Super Bowl details that can easily become blurred in a historical list.

Ranking the best teams without a title

1) 2007 New England Patriots

Best for: The clearest case for an all-time team without a title

New England went 16 and 0 in the regular season, scored a then-record 589 points, and reached Super Bowl XLII at 18 and 0. Tom Brady threw 50 touchdowns, Randy Moss caught 23, and the defense finished fourth in points allowed. The Giants won 17 to 14 after a relentless pass rush and David Tyree’s helmet catch, leaving the league’s first 16 and 0 team without the trophy.

2) 1998 Minnesota Vikings

Best for: Explosive balance on both sides of the ball

Minnesota finished 15 and 1 and set an NFL scoring record with 556 points. Randall Cunningham, Randy Moss, Cris Carter, and Robert Smith powered the offense, while the defense finished sixth in points allowed. Gary Anderson’s missed field goal gave Atlanta life in the NFC Championship Game, but the Vikings still had chances before losing 30 to 27 in overtime.

3) 2013 Denver Broncos

Best for: Record-setting offense

Denver scored 606 points, and Peyton Manning set single-season records with 5,477 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. The Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII, where Seattle’s defense and special teams controlled a 43 to 8 rout. The final game was poor, but the full season remains one of the greatest offensive campaigns ever.

4) 2001 St Louis Rams

Best for: Complete roster talent

The Greatest Show on Turf went 14 and 2, led the league in scoring, and also fielded a top-10 scoring defense. Kurt Warner won MVP, Marshall Faulk supplied 2,147 yards from scrimmage, and Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt stretched every coverage. New England disrupted the timing offense and won Super Bowl XXXVI on Adam Vinatieri’s final kick.

5) 1990 Buffalo Bills

Best for: The strongest of Buffalo’s four consecutive AFC champions

Buffalo went 13 and 3, scored 428 points, and entered Super Bowl XXV after decisive playoff wins over Miami and the Los Angeles Raiders. The Giants shortened the game, controlled possession, and survived Scott Norwood’s 47-yard attempt wide right. Buffalo returned to the next three Super Bowls, but the 1990 team had the best regular-season profile of the four.

6) 1984 Miami Dolphins

Best for: Historic passing in its era

Dan Marino threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, numbers that were far beyond the league’s normal passing production in 1984. Miami went 14 and 2 and scored 513 points. San Francisco controlled Super Bowl XIX and won 38 to 16, leaving Marino without another appearance in the game.

7) 2018 Kansas City Chiefs

Best for: The beginning of the Mahomes era

Patrick Mahomes threw 50 touchdowns and won MVP in his first full season as a starter. Kansas City went 12 and 4, scored 565 points, and hosted the AFC Championship Game. New England won 37 to 31 in overtime after a late offsides penalty erased a Chiefs interception that would have ended the game.

8) 1992 San Francisco 49ers

Best for: Elite play after a quarterback transition

Steve Young, not an injured Joe Montana, led the 49ers to a 14 and 2 record and won league MVP. San Francisco scored 431 points and allowed only 253. Dallas won the NFC Championship Game 30 to 20, but the 49ers remained a title-level team and returned to the conference championship the next season.

9) 2009 Indianapolis Colts

Best for: Efficient control of close games

Indianapolis opened 14 and 0 before resting starters and finishing 14 and 2. Peyton Manning won his fourth MVP, and the Colts beat Baltimore and the Jets to reach Super Bowl XLIV. New Orleans changed the game with an onside kick and sealed a 31 to 17 win on Tracy Porter’s interception return.

10) 2018 New Orleans Saints

Best for: The closest officiating controversy

New Orleans went 13 and 3, earned the NFC’s top seed, and ranked third in scoring. The Saints lost the NFC Championship Game to the Rams after an uncalled defensive pass interference penalty late in regulation. The missed call did not end the game by itself, but it removed a likely chance to drain the clock before a short go-ahead kick.

Which NFL franchises have never won a Super Bowl

As of the end of the 2025 season, the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, and Tennessee Titans have not won a Super Bowl. Cleveland and Detroit won NFL championships before the Super Bowl era.

That franchise question differs from ranking great seasons that fell short. A roster can belong on this list even if the same organization won titles in other years.

The difference also matters in a football game. The Madden 26 rebuild guide focuses on current organizations, while these historic seasons are useful scenarios to recreate in Madden NFL 26.
