The Witcher 3 Devs Want to Keep Making Physical Releases, Even If They're Just 'Boxes With Codes'

As a game collector myself, there are few things more satisfying than adding something new to the collection, whether it's a game box, a new figure, a themed controller, or anything else that adds to the collection.
Whether it is a standard edition or a fancy collector's edition packed with goodies, physical games have a charm digital libraries can't replicate, even if digital is more convenient nowadays. Sadly, the industry seems to be moving in the opposite direction, as PlayStation recently announced that it will no longer produce physical media in the near future.
However, it seems that some major studios are determined to keep the spark alive for as long as they can, and CD Projekt RED is one of them.
CD Projekt RED Isn't Ready to Give Up on Physical Releases
In a recent interview with Polish news outlet PAP Biznes, CD Projekt RED joint CEO Michał Nowakowski addressed reports that Sony wants to move away from physical PlayStation games in 2028, and his response might just make you look at your game shelf and smile.
According to the executive, game developers don't have complete control over whether their titles will be available on physical media, as console manufacturers also play a crucial role in the process. This means CD Projekt RED could have its hands tied when it comes to releasing physical PlayStation games starting in January 2028.
"It's worth remembering that console manufacturers have their own pressing plants. Unfortunately, it doesn't work in such a way that a studio can simply decide to release a game and supply physical copies to the market itself," Nowakowski explained. "So, if a given manufacturer completely shuts down the possibility of releasing games on physical media, those games simply won't be available in that format."
That doesn't mean CD Projekt RED is ready to abandon physical releases, though. Even if the format changes, Nowakowski made it clear that the studio wants to keep putting boxed products on store shelves.
"That doesn't change the fact that we still want to release physical copies of our titles. Even if it ultimately means a box containing a code and items related to our games, we'll still want to bring that product to market," he added.
Of course, a box containing a download code isn't quite the same as owning a game on a disc or cartridge. Still, the studio's comments suggest that it sees value in physical products beyond the game itself, whether that's collectible packaging or merchandise for fans. For collectors, that could mean having something tangible to display even if the game itself isn't included on a physical medium.
That doesn't mean CD Projekt RED is ready to abandon physical releases, though. Even if the format changes, Nowakowski made it clear that the studio wants to keep putting boxed products on store shelves.
While the discussion about physical releases looks toward the future of game ownership, Nowakowski also shared some insights into the studio's most well-known and beloved franchise, The Witcher.
As you probably already know, unless you've been living under a rock, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered recently launched as a free update for players who already own the game. According to Nowakowski, the game's sales performance following the update has been encouraging, with sales remaining higher than they were before the remaster even after a promotional period ended!
For a game that's more than 11 years old, it's a pretty good reminder that the right update can bring players back to an adventure they've already experienced.
