You’ll know that some co-op games test your friendship. Chained Beasts though? Well, that looks ready to put it through the arena, literally chaining players together as they fight for survival in a brutal gladiator roguelike.

Developed and published by Featherweight Games, it’s a four-player brawler where teamwork matters, the traps are deadly and a badly timed move could drag the whole gang into trouble. And it’s on Game Pass, Day One.

Fight Together Or Fall Together

In Chained Beasts, up to four players must coordinate their movements while physically tethered to one another. Work together and those chains can help trip enemies and turn the tide of battle. Lose track of your teammates, however, and you could end up tangled around a pillar while your opponents close in.

The arena offers plenty of ways to get creative. Slash foes with weapons, throw them into spike traps or send them towards pits of snakes. You can even hurl an urn at an enemy, although throwing your own weapon means making sure you have another ready.

As your fame grows, tougher opponents and brutal bosses stand between you and freedom. Each run also brings fresh challenges, with injuries such as limping, lost eyesight and hallucinations complicating your attempts to survive. Potions can help, but their side effects may leave you worse off.

Can You Earn Your Freedom?

There are ways to improve your odds. Learn powerful skills, purchase equipment, win the crowd’s favour and unlock characters with unique abilities. With different approaches needed on each run, success will depend on adapting your fighter as well as getting your friends to cooperate.

Chained Beasts lands on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support through the Xbox Store, as well as dropping onto Steam. The best bit is the Day One Game Pass release, even if it does mean that getting out of this arena will require considerably better teamwork than simply agreeing on what to play.
