Smilegate is celebrating the first anniversary of its roguelike RPG, Chaos Zero Nightmare, with a special update titled Nightmare X Carnival. The celebration brings a fresh Season 5 storyline, new Combatants and Partners, challenging boss battles, gameplay improvements, new costumes, and more anniversary rewards. Season 5, titled “A Promise Upon the Snow,” will arrive on October 21, 2026.

Chaos Zero Nightmare Season 5 introduces a new story

The anniversary update kicks off a new chapter in Galactic Disaster Season 5, titled A Promise Upon the Snow. Set on the frozen planet Nivalis, the story takes you to the crashed ark Front Nova, consumed by Chaos, and transformed into a new area known as Heaven’s Barrier. The Chaos God Dialos rules the region, setting the stage for more revelations about the gods and their connection to Chaos.

You can also experience Chapter 0, Escape from Judgment, ahead of the full Season 5 launch. If you have reached Captain Level 35, you can check the preview story and access it through the event page. Once the preview ends, the chapter becomes part of the main Season 5 story on October 21, 2026.

The update will also introduce new Combatants and Partners, giving you more options to experiment with your decks and team compositions.

1. Rossweisse and Sig

Rossweisse is the featured seasonal Combatant for the first anniversary. A Justice-element Striker and Apostle of the Circulation God Kirken, she uses a unique mechanic called Light and Dark, also known as Myungam.

This ability lets opposing cards merge in her hand, setting up powerful consecutive attacks. Her Partner, Sig, joins her as her self-proclaimed younger sister.

2. Blazebell and Vivian

Blazebell will arrive as the first Combatant from the Slay faction. As a Fire-element Controller, she focuses on the Bond and Purity keywords to support her team, improve AP generation, draw cards, and increase damage output. She is accompanied by Vivian, her Partner.

3. Dahlia and Edelyn

Dahlia is another new Combatant joining the roster, accompanied by her Partner, Edelyn. As a Superior Agent, she makes use of the Bond keyword to combine different card effects into powerful individual attacks.

New boss Valtraute leads the Season 5 challenges

Season 5 will also introduce Valtraute, the judge agent serving Dialos. She takes the spotlight as the season’s main boss, bringing dedicated mechanics that you will need to understand before taking her on. The encounter also features a unique theme track.

Alongside the new seasonal Boss, Full-Scale Offensive returns with a new season featuring three bosses. You must prepare three separate teams, with Combatants used on one battle unavailable for the others. Progress and team formations can be reset individually or together.

Gameplay improvements make deck-building and progression easier

The anniversary update will also introduce several system changes aimed at making preparation and progression more convenient.

Great Rift gets two separate modes

More combat and deck-building improvements

Other changes include:

  • Partner exploration passives: Four-star and five-star Partners will gain roguelike deck-building support effects, including credit boosts and increased Burn application chances.
  • Memory Shard customization: You can select sub-options when creating shards and use reconstitution to reroll enhanced stat values.
  • Simulation Dungeons: The first three weekly runs will be free. Subsequent runs will cost Ether.
  • Combat speed: A new option will let you speed up combat animations.
  • Profile customization: New titles, portraits, and portrait borders will let you personalize your profiles.

A new item called Aether Cell will be added. Once Aether reaches its maximum capacity, these cells will charge automatically at a certain rate. You can then exchange them for Aether at a 1:1 ratio.

New outfits and card skins expand customization options

The anniversary update introduces Special Grade Outfits, a more comprehensive cosmetic option that goes beyond changing a character’s appearance. Rosweisse will be the first Combatant to receive one. These outfits will update several character visuals, including:

Co-op mode is planned for December

The mode will let you tackle boss stages together, with shared rule changes and team-based tactics adding a different dimension to combat. However, the Corruption system has been delayed so the devs can refine it further.
