Cozy games can take on a lot of different forms nowadays, and now with over the hill, there’s a cozy car game too. It’s a bit of a weird game that exists more as a sandbox for you and friends to explore.

It’s more of an exploration game than anything else as you navigate various trails and make your way through different weather conditions. Snow, rain, and mud can’t stop you from finding the best places to view the world in this driving game.

In a way, it’s a game where you’ll only really get out of it what you’re willing to put into it. After putting some time into the game and exploring the five maps the game has to offer, I found myself stopping more often than not to simply take in the world around me.

What is over the hill?

This is tough to nail down because it’s not a traditional driving game where you'll do races and such. In fact, it’s quite the opposite of the high-octane speed games you might be used to, because over the hill focuses more on slowing you down. Pretty much everything in the game exists to have you slow down and look out over beautiful vistas as you watch the sunset in your car. There are no races or speed challenges, but there are things to find and some trails to run.

The challenge trails will have you going over some rough terrain and even have you scale the sides of cliffs until eventually spitting you out overlooking something incredible. Any challenges you face can be made a bit easier with some tools you can acquire and swap out at any Mechanic.

The Mechanic can also upgrade the car you’re using currently for Pebbles, the main currency in the game, but those upgrades are only applied to that car. Completing challenges or finding POIs is the main source of Pebbles, and they’re pretty generous with how many you can get.

There are a few other things to do, like finding and towing cars back to certain locations or finding some scenic spots on the map. There’s no real requirement to do any of that, though, and the game gives you the freedom to play however you want.

Exploring on Four Wheels

This was a strange thing to see in a game about driving cars, but the focus is definitely on exploration. For the most part, it’s well worth exploring, but you’re welcome to simply drive around aimlessly.

In a lot of ways, that seems to be the sort of goal of the game: getting players to just do as they please in a wide-open sandbox. There are things to do and see, but really the journey is what you make of it, and the game won’t ever demand more of you than that.

It was a surprising fact to learn that there really isn’t anything spurring you on besides your own desires. I often found myself going off the beaten path simply to prove that I could do things my own way, and the game only limited me some of the time.

You can’t scale a sheer cliff, although with the winch you can get pretty close, but you can do something a normal car probably could. That’s not really the point of the game, though, and as I began to understand what exactly I was playing, things fell more into place.

Stop and Smell the Roses

The game is always attempting to get you to slow down and see the world around you. Whether it's through various obstacles or by simply making the path in front of you much more difficult to traverse, you won’t be zooming all over the place.

You can get going pretty fast and find some choice shortcuts, but that’s not really in the spirit of the game. As the radio plays a mellow song while you drive through the sand watching the sun get lower in the sky, you start to realize that you don’t want to go any faster.

I haven’t played a cozy game like this ever, and it’s really something that exists to get you to stop and take a breath. This game isn’t going to demand your time or attention. In fact, it’s a fairly short experience, and you can see most of the maps in under ten hours.

There aren’t any real races to do or anything like that, but there is plenty to see and do. If you have a group of friends to play with, this game can be a great way to just have a nice relaxing time and catch up, much like Big Walk in a lot of ways.

Lost and Alone

One thing I can say that I was hoping for more of was a bit of a story or something to give me a reason to explore more. Unless you’re really itching to unlock all the maps, you don’t have to do anything the game presents you with.

There are some cool things to see, but the game seems more aimed at a group of players rather than an individual. The beauty of the game combined with the radio is a great time, but it feels like there was a missed opportunity to present some kind of story.

It doesn’t need one necessarily, but playing alone did feel a bit lonely without any sort of characters to seek out or get to know. Even if they had been just simple things with side quests, it would’ve helped to break up that feeling of loneliness while out and about.

That’s a really nitpicky thing to have an issue with, but with sandbox games, especially, I think having some kind of story can help alleviate some of that emptiness. It isn’t a major problem that’ll weigh you down, but it does feel a bit like the game is missing something if you aren’t making your own fun with friends.

The Beauty of Simplicity

One thing I truly adored about over the hill is that it’s incredibly simple. This isn’t a driving game that’s looking to be hyperrealistic or make it hard for people to play. It’s only got a few buttons, and you’ll never have to worry about feeling overwhelmed by the mechanics.

The art style is also pretty simple, and that’s clearly by design. With lower-poly graphics, the game can get a really good rendering distance, meaning you’ve got some great things to see, and you can look out over some incredible vistas.

There are also some animals to see and photograph, but everything is in a low-poly design that makes things feel pretty simple. Some people will wonder why it’s not more realistic or made with better graphics, but the game doesn’t need those to hit the mark.

I’ve always thought of graphics as secondary, but here they’re a great way to keep you appreciating the simpler parts of life. Nothing is incredibly showy, but there’s still something awe-inspiring about looking out over a wide part of the map after making a difficult journey.

over the hill is a peaceful sandbox game that gives you the freedom to do whatever you want to do. You can play with friends, roam the sandbox together while checking off objectives, or just enjoy your time in the cozy world. Playing alone can make the world feel a bit empty; it still has some kinks to work out, but there’s a very good time to be had just driving around and listening to the radio while you watch the sunset from a peak you just climbed.
