Forget Running – Build A Better Defence
Survivor Cells puts a different spin on the familiar survivor-like formula – you know, the formula that sees Vampire Survivors as king. Rather than relying on frantic movement to escape every threat, success depends on positioning, managing the space around you and combining defensive barriers with offensive abilities. You’ll face huge hordes of pathogens, using medicines and nanotechnology to create a build capable of keeping the organism alive.
There’s a bit more control over your upgrades than simply hoping the right item drops, too. A real-time alchemy system lets you fuse and transform upgrades during a run, giving you the chance to adapt your strategy as the infection develops. Reach the end of a life cycle and you’ll secure a checkpoint, providing a welcome pause before the next challenge.
Three Ways To Fight The Infection
The campaign, Life’s Journey, follows your evolution over the years as you tackle dangerous infections and mutant bosses. Progress unlocks new protective cells, medicines and genetic technologies, while resources collected along the way can be spent in the DNA Shop to improve your permanent stats.
Once you’ve reached the 100-year mark in the campaign, Endless Mode opens up an altogether tougher test, pitting you against a continuing storm of pathogens. Pandemic Mode takes a different approach, offering weekly 15-minute challenges with just three attempts to earn rare proteins and climb the global leaderboard.
If you’d rather have more tools at your disposal from the start, the Premium Edition costs £10.74 and includes the base game alongside two DLC packs.
Robin is a lethal archer whose Arrow Rain ability unleashes a bouncing volley of arrows in the direction indicated by your shield, hitting viruses from multiple angles. Virusbane takes the samurai route, using Blade Storm to darken the screen before unleashing an anime-style barrage of blades. Both come with exclusive skins, and those skins can also be equipped on other cells.
The editions break down as follows:
- Standard Edition – £8.39: The full base game, including all three modes and its progression systems.
- Premium Edition – £10.74: The base game plus the Robin and Virusbane DLC packs, with their additional abilities and exclusive skins.
With such a low cost separating the two, the Premium Edition is worth considering if you want both extra characters and their distinctive abilities. Those DLC packs will otherwise cost you £1.69 each.
If you fancy a survivor-like that asks you to build a biological fortress instead of constantly running for your life, YAW Studios has a rather different fight on its hands.
