SEGA is temporarily removing Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition from sale, two days after the remaster launched on PC on October 13. The publisher announced the decision on October 15, and the original 2011 release of Total War: SHOGUN 2 is available to buy on Steam again.
SEGA shared the news in a statement on its official X account, saying the Complete Edition has “fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards.”
The company is working with platform holders to take the game off storefronts while it investigates the problems, and every player who already bought the Complete Edition keeps access.
SEGA’s Plans for the Complete Edition
SEGA’s statement responds directly to the feedback, comments, and reviews that followed launch, and the publisher agrees the current version of the game falls below where it needs to be. Two days after release, the Complete Edition holds an Overwhelmingly Negative user rating on Steam.
Creative Assembly and MATABOO developed the Complete Edition, with SEGA publishing. SEGA says it is working with its development partner to find the causes of the problems, deliver improvements, and bring the remaster up to the quality standard of the Total War series.
What Changes for Current Owners and New Buyers
Deployment Screen
The removal only stops new purchases of the Complete Edition. Existing copies of both versions keep working, and the original is now the only version new players can buy on Steam until SEGA restores the remaster.
- Complete Edition owners: The game stays in your library and remains playable.
- Original owners: The 2011 release plays as normal, and Steam owners received any missing DLC for free as part of the Complete Edition launch.
- New buyers: The original Total War: SHOGUN 2 is back on Steam for $29.99, with the Blood Pack DLC sold separately for $2.99.
- Mod users: The original keeps Steam Workshop support. The Complete Edition uses Mod.io and does not run legacy mods.
- Refunds: SEGA’s statement does not announce a special refund program, so Steam purchases fall under the standard Steam refund policy of 14 days and under two hours of playtime.
