Alienware Area 51 Pre-Built Owner Finds That Dell Locked The Ryzen 9 9950X3D To Work With The Motherboard Only, Preventing Him From Swapping Out Parts To Custom PC

The Ryzen 9 9950X3D would have been the perfect addition to deliver a multi-core and gaming performance boost thanks to sporting 16 cores, and AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, assuming this particular PC could get working in other motherboards. An Alienware Area 51 pre-built gaming desktop owner finds out that he just spent money on parts that he cannot swap out to his custom PC like the CPU because Dell has locked it from being used other than the Area 51.

Dell has been called out in the past for locking down PC parts, making it an anti-consumer business practice

While we don’t understand the premise of purchasing an entire pre-built just to swap out parts like the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, but we can only assume that Redditor “u/Designer_Teaching_33” obtained a solid deal on the Alienware Area 51 pre-built, because there’s no other explanation as to why he’d proceed with such a purchase regardless, he found out in the worst possible manner that the Ryzen 9 9950X3D cannot be recognized by his other motherboard since it’s vendor-locked

The owner says that the Alienware Area 51 motherboard is mediocre and leaves little in the way of upgrades. Still, Dell has resorted to anti-consumer tactics by exploiting a feature called Platform Secure Boot. This addition verifies the BIOS firmware to ensure compatibility and when enabled on systems like the Area 51, are permanently fused to the vendor’s BIOS signing key. In short, the CPU won’t be recognized by any other motherboard, meaning that if the pre-built gaming desktop suffers from a hardware or software error, Dell is at liberty to charge whatever it can to its customers.

It’s also essential to note, that Dell has resorted to this tactic on previous occasions, with the company being called out on its own forums and Linus Tech Tips. However, before we begin pointing fingers at Dell, it needs to be highlighted that the company isn’t the only vendor locking down CPUs. Lenovo was also found out to be following the same anti-consumer behavior, making the purchasing of pre-builts a death sentence for consumers who wished to swap out parts or upgrade other components down the road.

Even if the Redditor reaches out to Dell, we doubt the company will be receptive to his request to unlock the Ryzen 9 9950X3D, so he’ll have to live with the painful lesson until he decides to go down the DIY route.
