《最终幻想7》作曲家解释为何其音乐相比前作“无聊”

Final Fantasy has always been known for its incredible soundtracks, with memorable songs that have stayed with fans across generations. Even music from the series’ oldest entries continues to be celebrated by fans to this day.

However, much to the surprise of many, one of the most beloved games in the franchise apparently does not have a particularly strong soundtrack — at least according to its own composer, legendary Final Fantasy musician Nobuo Uematsu.

As first reported by GamesRadar, Uematsu discusses his work on the series in the book Nobuo Uematsu: On The Record by James Mielke. In it, the composer reveals that he finds most of the music in Final Fantasy 7 boring compared to his work on other games in the series.

“Because of the improvements in the visuals, the music distracts from the gameplay if the melody is too catchy,” he adds. “So I wrote music that doesn’t impose on the focus for the story.”

Uematsu believes his contributions were more prominent when Final Fantasy was still being developed for the NES and SNES.

“For the Famicom and Super Famicom games, the music played a role in advancing the story,” he says.

“But by Final Fantasy 7, the visuals are convincing enough to tell the story, so it was better for the music to step back,” he recalls. “I think the revelation that I’m adding music to enhance the visuals started in Final Fantasy 7 and carried on to Final Fantasy 8.”

Despite his feelings about the soundtrack, Final Fantasy 7 remains one of the most celebrated entries in the franchise, with many of its tracks becoming iconic among fans.

Thanks FFII Music for the news today. Uematsu will also return to the series for the third installment of the remake project, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which is confirmed to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027.
