Jagex has announced RuneScape 4, a new MMO set in the RuneScape universe, during its RuneFest 2026 event. It is the fourth MMO in the long-running series and the first RuneScape game to be built in Unreal Engine.

Do not expect to play it soon. The studio says development is still at a very early stage.

The project did not begin life as a new game. According to Jagex, it was planned as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, but its scope kept growing until the team concluded it needed to stand on its own as a full MMO. Jesse America, executive producer on Dragonwilds, told the RuneFest audience that the idea changed course once the team had assessed its prototypes and designs.

A short teaser trailer accompanied the announcement. The footage points towards dragons, wide-scale exploration and adventure as central themes, though a brief teaser this early in production gives only a partial view of what the finished game will look like. Jagex described RuneScape 4 as a typical game from the studio.

Plenty is still unconfirmed. Jagex has not given a release date or named any platforms, and it has not said which version of Unreal Engine the game uses.

Existing players also have open questions. Jagex has not said how RuneScape 4 will sit alongside the games already running, and has made no commitment on whether character progression will carry over or how any move from the current titles would work. For a community that has spent years building up accounts, those answers will matter more than any trailer.

The move to Unreal Engine marks a clear technical break for the series. Dragonwilds, the survival spin-off this project grew out of, had already taken the franchise in a new direction, and RuneScape 4 now extends that shift to a full MMO.

RuneScape 4 was not the only news from the event. Jagex also laid out its upcoming plans for Old School RuneScape, the main RuneScape game and Dragonwilds, so all three existing titles have their own roadmaps while the new MMO remains a long-term project with no launch window.
