At the end of the Icebrood Saga, we finally deal with Primordius and Jormag at the same time. If you haven't played that content, make sure to catch up by buying the Icebrood Saga episodes in-game. Otherwise, you can jump in with this and get caught up by viewing the video below:

Tons of new content has been added with this expansion! Including five maps, strike missions (Think Trials from FFXIV), and much, much more.

We have a ResetEra guild as well, REBORN FLAME [PHNX]. You can message Ashodin.7604 in-game to get an invite to the guild, we still have tons of members coming in and coming back to the game!

We also have a GUILD DISCORD for the game, if you wish to discuss there.

WELCOME TO CANTHA, FINALLY!

Great OT! Even though I can't start the expansion yet, I'm going to go ahead and snag it while I work through HoT and Path of Fire

Yessss!

I have annoyingly been too busy to play much of it yet, but I've been loving both the map and story so far!

pink

just started!

the map of cantha is absolutely fucking gorgeous!

harbinger elite class is dope as well

Splatbang

Just finished the first act and have everything except the kirin challenge done on the first map. So far, I'm really impressed, the first map is really beautiful and has a nice size. Not as big as some of the PoF maps but it seems to strike a good balance between size and content. Some of the PoF maps felt a bit empty in that regard.

Also: Maybe I just didn't pay attention during the rest of the game, but there seems to be some light swearing in cantha? I heard an asshole during the act 1 boss fight and I think someone else was swearing a bit before as well. Kind of funny.

There it is! Thanks Ashodin

I played GW2 back when it first came out, have zero recollection of my time with the game, and haven't kept up with the game. Are there any recommendations for what class I should roll with if I am looking to create a new character and expect to primarily play solo. I saw the preview thread suggested a Necromancer but I wanted to see if there were any additional thoughts.

I like Necro and Ranger for solo play. Necro has high base HP and minions, Ranger has a pet and long range. To be honest, most classes are viable for solo play if using condition based gear/builds, but Necro and Ranger can more easily solo regardless of power or condition builds

I really recommend Ranger because the pet helps out a lot

Great OT
Playing the exp pack from the minute it launched yesterday and except for some boring small talks during the story, I really like it.
As a long time player, even since the first Guild Wars back in 2005, its really nostalgic for me to return to Cantha, so I even have GW1 installed and running separately, just to compare landmarks and vistas across both games.

EssBeeVee

I still have the game reinstalled. I think I Stopped right when ow1 came out. I need to pop back in again. Really like the game. But I don't want to be juggling this and lost ark 😂

Fendajaz

I should really play GW2, glad to hear its still successful.

GW1 was my jam.

Positives for this expac:

  • Maps are huge. Wide and Tall.
  • Map Metas are fun and do need some decent coordination
  • They are getting better with in-game cinematics.
  • Dynamic events are better balanced than HoT
  • Story was decent and I do like how they break it down into chapters.
  • If you enjoy Taimi, this is your expac.

Edit: Another positive - Think 95% of the story is voiced. Big plus on that.

Negatives for this expac:

  • Maps are huge. Wide and Tall. Skyscale feels almost like it is mandatory for some maps.
  • Skiff and fishing are not something to push as major additions. Could have come with a regular patch.
  • Story has the same common tropes we all love in generic rpg games. :/
  • If you dislike Taimi, you will hate this expac.

I finished the story in about 8 hours with my maxed out Engineer that can melt shit with ease and thanks to the Mech as a Tank, it was even easier. I did only the bare minimum on open world stuff. I did not do all the achievements, but most came naturally as I progressed through the story. They toned down the difficulty of most of them so I can probably finish them up this weekend.

Big Grats to Jory and Kas!

Thank you both for your feedback! I was leaning Necro after all of the praise in the other thread but I'll look into the Ranger as well.

Anet needs to up the marketing

I've barely seen any buzz around for this expansion. I actually forgot it was out until yesterday. I might pop in and take a look through the expansion at some point but in no great hurry.

Releasing around Elden Ring is a really difficult thing to do

Vinx

Releasing around Elden Ring is a really difficult thing to do

I'd say most MMO gamers knows about WoW 9.2

GW2 dosnt exactly have any buzz anymore. Over 4 years between expansions will do that.

I will agree the marketing is a problem

But the playerbase is not. The game has over 300k players and is still very robust.

NC Soft and Anet marketing sucks, they finally put some ads on twitch 2 days before launch, but instead of buying huge amount of ad time like other games, I saw the ad maybe 5 times. Instead of selling the story of the game, the ad sold the new features, the ad was designed for current players, the ad should have been selling itself to new players. GW2 will live or die off the current user base, their failure to properly advertise the game could be it's downfall..

Releasing around Elden Ring is a really difficult thing to do

Yes Elden Ring is massive, soul games are incredibly popular, but their lack of advertising goes way back, their inability to bring in new players is quite fascinating, also sad and pathetic, as WoW slowly dies, they failed to capture those gamers, instead they went to FF14..

Mamoniadas

I started playing earlier this year (and a few other mmos just to clarify I didnt see or get effected by the EoD "promotion") and ended up getting the EoD standard collection with PoF and HoT assuming it'd be a decent start to investing into the game. Im extremely lost but piecing together as I go along. That being said, am I clear on understanding the initial goal for me is to hit lvl 80 by roaming the world and doing heart quests and zone completion? It looks like only after I'm level 80 then i can do the expansion content and get the raptor and purchase and go through LW seasons? I also am struggling with inventory space is bags/bank storage the next best initial investment? thx

Where is the player base number from?

Man, every time I see GW2 I think about jumping back in. I haven't played since initial release. Wouldn't even recognize the game if I reckon? This is probably asked a million times but is it easy to jump in?

Probably the best mmo to jump back into easily. The only huge difference would be defiance bars, mounts, gliding and areas having map spanning meta events with mini raid like bosses.

Old Man Spike

Thanks for making the thread, Ashodin. Looks great!

Man that expansion download took all morning and part of the afternoon with my crappy ISP! I don't know what I was expecting; it's been a while since I downloaded a game, and I've gotten so used to those Living World updates being comparatively small that it completely skipped my mind this was probably going to take so long. I still haven't jumped into the expansion yet, and I might just hold off until tomorrow when I've got a little more free time. Looking forward to my Thief setting foot in Cantha!

Depends on whether you have the expansions or just the core game, and how active or casual you want to be when playing. For example, playing as a "minion master" build Necromancer can be very low intensity for relaxed exploring, while playing something like core Mesmer is more active and reliant on skill management and timing to be really effective. MetaBattle is a good resource for general builds that do well in a variety of play modes without getting locked into specific roles.

Yeah, having fun and hitting 80 should be the focus early on so that you can unlock access to everything. Zone completions (especially core zones) are a good way to get a chance at a free Black Lion Chest key, so don't overlook those although I wouldn't make running them a priority over having fun; chasing all those renown hearts can get tedious, trust me. I wouldn't worry too much about bank storage tabs especially early on, either; it's generally better to create new characters and put 20-slot bags on them than spend gems on storage tabs anyway, outside of big sale events (and even then). You can get bigger bags through crafting and achievements, but if you really want to get hands on some quickly then Uncanny Canner achievement and Fractals are the way to go.

Cant wait to get into this, word is the expansion is very good.

Pygrus

The opening to the expansion is really good. I didn't play through Icebrood saga but Anet has really implanted these characters into my mind on a level that FF14 has achieved.

All the conversation in the beginning before the first scenario is just so good.

Aquila

I fell off GW2 around when Path of Fire launched. Bought the expac then never played it. Always meant to come back but just never found the time.

How many hours to catch up story-wise from like 1/2 way post-HoT to EoD? Pretty sure I have all living world episodes unlocked at least. Last thing I remember is dealing with bloodstone White Mantle.

Being lost is sort of part of the fun, but I can see it being a huge hurdle for getting into the game. Hitting level 80 would be the goal, make sure to have fun on the way though. Doing map completion can get tedious and I'd say it'd be better to prioritize getting into dynamic events while travelling to hearts, then focus on map completion once you get a mount. As for inventory space, extra bags are per character, so I don't think it's the best investment, though it is the cheapest. I'd prioritize expanding material storage, more bank storage, and using guild bank storage (can make a personal guild just for storage). If you need bigger bags, they can be obtained by levelling up, going through personal story, and in pretty much all game modes like sPvP, WvW, Fractals, etc. Can also ask a friend or guildie to craft you some.

Also, "/wiki " is a super useful tool in-game. You can use it for topics or items (eg. "/wiki lore" for Guild Wars lore, "/wiki et" for event timers, or "/wiki item name"). Can also be used when shift+clicking an item, just make sure to type out "/wiki " first.

Assuming the last chapter you did was Out of the Shadows from LW Season 3: Chapter 1 I'd spitball it at 50-60 hours? If you don't spend much time exploring you can generally do a chapter in 2-3 hours and I'd guesstimate POF story at 10, but it's been a while. That said you don't have to play through the entire story in a linear fashion and can jump around however you want, but if you want to do it in order that's my best guess.

Playing through the Living World story will also give you progress on the "Return to" and "Seasons of the Dragon" achievements which give map currency, skins, ascended weapon, a 32 slot bag, legendary precursor, and finally a Legendary amulet. It'll take longer to fully complete those achievements and get all the rewards, but you'll get some nice bonuses even if all you do is the story instances.

Does anyone still play with a controller? I remember finding it pretty good when I used it many years ago but I can't find the setup anymore.
I tried playing a bit with mouse and keyboard but there are so many damn keys to use for combat. Do people rebind them in some more efficient manner than 0-9?

I rebind Q=6, Z=7, X=8, C=9, E=0, Alt+D=`, and F1-F5 = Shift+1-5.

Kalentan

God I need to catch up to play the expansion... It just released at like the worst time for me lol

Anyone else experiencing absurdly low map population? I got to New Kaineng City and have only run into like 3 other players?

There's an issue where maps aren't being closed when empty so there's too many instances of the same map.

Loving the expansion so far!

A word of warning to everyone: ANet has changed salvage mechanics to allow you to salvage certain utility items and consumables from festivals. I hit the "salvage all _____" button and would have flushed a bunch of Halloween loot stored on an alt down the toilet had I not noticed the unintended additions to the salvage queue before confirming.

Check before you salvage!

EDIT

: As Fishious mentioned below the festival items will show up in the salvage queue but don't actually get salvaged (for now); this may simply be a new bug to be fixed soon.

Doesn't it just add them to the currency wallet?

As far as I've been able to tell it doesn't actually salvage them. A bunch of consumables show up in the preview window whenever I use salvage all on my copper fed salvage-o-matic, but it doesn't actually salvage any of them. It seems you need a specific new salvage kit to actually salvage these consumables so presumably this is just a visual bug.

I got prompted to salvage Sharpening Skulls, Crystallized Nougat, and Batwing Brew Bottles on my Halloween alt. Switched to another alt and got prompted to salvage the various eggnogs and Winter's Blessing consumables.

Hopefully it's just a bug and they sort it out quickly. Those consumables are great, cheap boosts to use for general playing and I'd hate to accidentally lose them.

As someone who never experienced fighting them the first time I'm pretty happy with how they handled reintroducing them as well. The reveal in the story was pretty fun too.
