Lisa Su Wanted Ryzen 7 5800X3D As The “Final Gift” For AM4 Owners, Reveals AMD’s Travis Kirsch

Interview Reveals AMD CEO, Lisa Su, Revived Ryzen 7 5800X3D as a Final Gift for Users Wanting to Upgrade their AM4 Systems

An interesting conversation between the Japanese publication My Navi and AMD's Senior Director of Client Product Management, Travis Kirsch, was published on the website. The publication asked various questions regarding the launch of X3D CPUs as well as his thoughts on the current DRAM market. There are some interesting excerpts in the conversation, particularly regarding the older Ryzen X3D chips.

We all know that AMD launched its first 3D V-Cache Technology-based processor in 2022. It was the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, based on the Zen 3 architecture, and came out much later than the Ryzen 5000 launch. AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, was the one who introduced the new chip at the CES 2022 event, and the rest is history. The CPU existed in the market for years, even though AMD launched more advanced X3D chips later.

Despite AM5 becoming the more dominant platform in recent years, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D continued its legacy as it was one of the last and fastest processors in the lineup, allowing AM4 users to upgrade one more time. In the interview, the Japanese outlet asked about the recent re-launch of the product in June, to which Kirsch replied that it was Lisa Su's idea to revive the chip. He says that she wanted the Ryzen 7 5800X3D as a "final gift" to AM4 owners who have been using the platform for the last 10 years.

Q: Next up is the AM4 Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition . This was just announced in June, but is the purpose of this product because AMD feels the need for a new product for AM4, or is there another reason?

A: From a manufacturing standpoint, production of the original Ryzen 7 5800 X3D has ended, and we no longer produce it at our fabs. Originally, several years ago, I believe Lisa was one of the people who suggested reviving the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. It was like a final gift to our loyal users who had used our AM4 for almost 10 years, giving them one last chance to upgrade their PCs using DDR4 systems. However, this required restarting the production lines, which took some time. In short, this was planned before the changes in the memory market occurred, and it was not considered as a solution to the DDR5 shortage.

Restarting the Ryzen 7 5800X3D production took time, as we know the original manufacturing process was no longer available, which made AMD re-engineer the processor. Nonetheless, Kirsch made an interesting point here. He says the decision to revive Ryzen 7 5800X3D wasn't due to the DRAM shortage, as the decision was already made prior to the RAMpocalypse.

Overall, the decision came at the right time. 5800X3D still holds up to the modern gaming requirements. Millions of PC users are still running the AM4 platform, and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D still holds up well against modern gaming requirements. Even though it can't compete with modern X3D chips like Ryzen 7800X3D or Ryzen 9850X3D, it's still powerful enough to handle modern GPUs and titles with ease.
