The Wolf Among Us Remastered has received a free playable demo as part of Steam Next Fest, giving players an opportunity to revisit Telltale Games’ acclaimed detective thriller ahead of its October 29 release. The remaster is being developed by Telltale itself, with the studio also confirming the long-awaited sequel, The Wolf Among Us 2, is scheduled to finally launch in 2027.
Originally released in 2013, The Wolf Among Us is based on DC’s Fables comic series and follows Bigby Wolf, the sheriff of Fabletown, as he investigates a series of murders involving fairy-tale characters living secretly in New York City. Its blend of noir storytelling, player choice, and memorable characters helped establish it as one of Telltale’s most celebrated games.
The Wolf Among Us Remastered’s Demo Is Available During Steam Next Fest
Players can now download the free demo through Steam, which includes the entirety of the game’s first episode, Faith. This gives newcomers a chance to experience Bigby’s opening investigation, while returning players can see how the remaster compares to the original.
The demo arrives ahead of the remaster’s digital release on October 29 for PC (via Steam & Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox One, with the latter playable on Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility. Physical editions and a Nintendo Switch version are expected to follow at a later date.
The updated version includes improved lighting, character models, animations and audio, alongside a redesigned interface and accessibility improvements. There’s also a new Noir Mode, which allows players to switch between the remastered visuals and a black-and-white presentation inspired by classic detective films.
Early reactions to the demo have been mixed. Some players on Reddit have praised its technical improvements, particularly reduced stuttering and updated animations, while others have questioned whether the more saturated visuals improve upon the original game’s distinctive art direction.
Why Is Telltale Remastering The Wolf Among Us, and What’s Happening With the Sequel?
The return of The Wolf Among Us is particularly significant given Telltale’s turbulent history. The original studio effectively shut down in 2018, laying off most of its staff and cancelling several projects, including the planned second season of The Wolf Among Us. The Telltale name was subsequently revived in 2019 by LCG Entertainment, which acquired the company’s assets and began rebuilding the business.
The revived Telltale also moved away from the proprietary Telltale Tool engine used in its earlier games, adopting Unreal Engine for new projects. The transition represented a significant technical overhaul for a studio whose distinctive episodic adventures had previously relied on the same underlying technology for years.
According to Telltale, the remaster is intended to introduce a new generation of players to Fabletown while preserving the original game’s story, atmosphere and creative direction.
“We wanted to honor the Telltale legacy,” explained Matt Saia, game director of The Wolf Among Us Remastered, in an interview published by PlayStation. “This is a classic title, and it needed a respectful update.”
Rather than simply increasing the game’s resolution, the developers have rebuilt character models, created new textures and shaders, and reworked the lighting throughout every scene. The remaster also includes more than an hour of additional material, including developer interviews, behind-the-scenes videos, image galleries and playable deleted scenes.
Meanwhile, The Wolf Among Us 2 remains scheduled for release in 2027, more than a decade after the first game’s debut. The sequel takes place five months after the original story, returning players to Fabletown as Bigby investigates another series of violent crimes threatening the community’s fragile balance.
Snow White will also return, attempting to maintain order as competing interests and new criminal forces threaten to reshape Fabletown’s underworld. Telltale has confirmed that the sequel will once again emphasize investigation, difficult choices, and the consequences of Bigby’s actions.
The sequel is planned for PC, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 1 & 2. An exact release date has yet to be announced.
