Switch 2 暂时保留实体游戏
Switch 2 Keeps Physical Games in Play, For Now
Nintendo has no current plans to abandon physical games, according to comments from Bill van Zyll, the company’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, reported by GamesIndustry.biz. That’s a welcome signal for Switch 2 collectors, but not a permanent promise: van Zyll described Nintendo’s approach as guided by what players prefer, as Sony prepares to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028.
Van Zyll discussed the company’s position in an interview with Brazilian YouTuber Coelho no Japão. TechRadar and TheGamer also reported his remarks, including his point that the Switch 2 supports both digital and physical games.
Nintendo is keeping both Switch 2 formats in play
The Switch 2 launched in June 2025, and players can buy games through the Nintendo eShop or on cartridge. Van Zyll said Nintendo pays close attention to consumer preferences; in other words, the company’s current position is to offer formats people want, rather than to promise that physical releases will continue indefinitely.

That distinction matters if you’re choosing a platform partly for boxed games. Nintendo’s Switch 2 software options include both digital downloads and physical releases, though a cartridge does not always contain the complete game.
A Switch 2 cartridge may still need a download
Some Switch 2 cartridges hold the full game, while others are Game-Key Cards: physical cards that act as a licence for a digital version. Eurogamer reported that these cards have prompted pushback on several releases from customers who expected the game itself to be on the cartridge.
So “physical” can mean different things on Nintendo’s console. The distinction is part of the broader debate over physical game formats, and a useful detail to check before buying a boxed Switch 2 release.
| Switch 2 format | What you get | Where it comes from | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital | A downloadable game | Nintendo eShop | Purchased and accessed digitally |
| Full-game cartridge | The game on the cartridge | Physical retail release | Not all cartridges use this format |
| Game-Key Card | A licence for a digital game | Physical retail release | Does not contain the full game |
Nintendo’s current stance contrasts with Sony’s plan
Sony announced in July that it will end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028, citing customers’ shift towards digital purchases. The change applies to new releases from that date; it does not, on the information reported here, establish that existing disc games will stop working or that every PlayStation retail product will become a download code.
Nintendo, by contrast, has not announced a cutoff date for physical games. Van Zyll’s comments leave the door open to future changes if customer preferences shift, so Switch 2 owners can take his statement as Nintendo’s position for now-not a guarantee covering the console’s entire lifespan.
The next thing to watch is whether Nintendo continues offering both formats as the Switch 2 library grows. For now, its message is that consumer demand-not a fixed timetable-will guide that decision.
