A recent report has learned that there is skepticism at EA Sports on the future of their College Football series. With some worrying it may be gone within the next five years or less.

Via Insider Gaming, several sources have voiced their concerns about the future of the College Football games. The rising expenses are the main culprit in these doubts.

Many may remember this series actually is a revival of the classic NCAA Football series from EA Sports from years ago, but legal problems about using the athlete’s name and likeliness without pay caused the game series to shut down. However, with the introduction of NIL (name, image, likeliness) in college sports, the series was resurrected in 2024 with College Football 25.

The worry about its future starts with expenses, and originally, EA Sports paid college athletes each about $600 to agree to appear in the game, and with over 11K players in agreement, it cost EA Sports a little over $7 million to have. Now, NIL costs have gone up, and $600 won’t be enough anymore.

Now, the cost has gone up to $1,500 per athlete, and that would cost a total of $20 million to have all players in the game, a massive increase from the first game. These costs at some point will become too great for EA Sports to profit anymore.

College Football 25 was a smash-hit with gamers, as it topped the best-sellers list for that year. Now, the sales are good, but nowhere near the initial hype. The original series was dormant for years, so it made sense gamers were dying to get back in, but since then, sales have come back down to earth for EA Sports.

EA Sports also has to pay to license universities, bowl games added, and other marketing costs that just adds up with the rising NIL price tag. The reports also expect NIL deals to cost even more going forward, meaning EA Sports could be paying between $30 and $40 million just on player names.

It remains to be seen if College Football can persevere through the rising prices. The sources show real concern if the game will exist or remain remotely profitable in a few years, so fans should enjoy the games now while it is still around.
