Nintendo has no plans to stop releasing physical games, according to Bill van Zyll, the company’s vice president and general manager for Latin America.

Speaking in an interview with Coelho, reported by Nintendo Everything, he said consumer preferences remain central to Nintendo’s approach to physical and digital distribution.

Van Zyll pointed to Nintendo Switch 2’s support for both formats and acknowledged the continued interest in physical releases.

“There’s no plans to ditch physical. We know how much the fans like it as well,” he said. His comments describe Nintendo’s current position without setting a permanent commitment for future hardware.

The statement comes as Sony prepares to end physical disc production for new PlayStation games in January 2028. Sony’s announcement specifies that the transition will not affect games already released, or those arriving on disc before that date.

On Switch 2, physical releases include regular game cards and game-key cards. Nintendo’s support documentation explains that game-key cards require players to download the game rather than containing its full data. The card must then remain inserted to play, including after the initial download.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, US spending on game-key card releases increased 631% year over year in the reported 2026 year-to-date period. The figure measures spending rather than copies sold, helping offset declining spending across other physical formats.
