Resolution Games will switch off online multiplayer in Ultimechs on October 20, and the game will come off the Steam store on the same date. Anyone who owns it keeps a single-player version, and the companion Ultimechs Spectator app goes too.

The studio set out the plan in a Steam post published at 13:29 UTC on October 8: "We want to let our players know that we'll soon be retiring online multiplayer support for Ultimechs and will transition the game to a single-player-only experience." It is the first entry on the game's Steam news feed since October 2023.

Single-player survives, the spectator app does not

"You'll still be able to jump into the arena and enjoy Ultimechs in single-player mode after multiplayer services end on October 20, 2026," Resolution Games writes. "On that date, the game will also be delisted from the Steam Store alongside the Ultimechs Spectator, which will no longer be able to spectate any matches."

The spectator tool is a separate free Steam listing, pitched on its own store page as a way for streamers and viewers to follow a match from a PC, with a choice of camera angles and broadcast overlays. It goes on the same date, with no matches left to spectate.

A delisting is not a deletion. Ultimechs is free to play, and it stays in the library of everyone who has already claimed it. What goes on October 20 is the chance to pick it up for the first time.

Purchases are off, and UltiCoins still spend

The October 8 post says in-app purchases had been disabled by the time it went up: "In preparation for this, in-app purchases have been disabled in the game, but you will still be able to spend any UltiCoins you have purchased already, even after multiplayer services have ended." So the in-game currency outlives the servers it was bought for.

Resolution Games gives no reason for the retirement. The post closes on a thank you to everyone "who has competed in the arena with us over the years", and on an instruction to keep the GauntJets flying.

What is being switched off

Ultimechs launched on Steam on September 15, 2022 as a free rocket-fist arena game, a mech scrambling after a ball with punches that fly off the wrist and curve back. Mixed News covered it at the time as a faster, VR-native answer to the Rocket League idea, and the same studio has since gone on to the first official Dungeons & Dragons VR game.

The scale of who is affected on Steam is modest. Valve's review API returned 153 reviews for the game on October 13, 131 of them positive against 22 negative, which Steam summarises as "Very Positive".

On October 21 the arena will still open for one player. The store page will not.
