Xbox Project Helix May Be Waiting On Big Launch Exclusive, As Its Reported Holiday 2028 Date Isn’t Tied To Hardware

While it was previously widely suggested that the Xbox Project Helix would launch in late 2027, a new report revealed that the system's launch is planned for Holiday 2028, besides confirming an unprecedented projected price that will make the system a very hard sell. The reasons for this potential delay haven't been specified, but according to known AMD leaker Kepler L2, they have nothing to do with the hardware.

"Prices estimate is what I have been saying for almost a year," the leaker said on the NeoGAF forums. "As for release date, there's no delay on AMD's side and everything MS has said recently also pointed to a 2027 release. So if the report is accurate this delay decision is recent and not HW related (even the RAM price argument doesn't work because BOM won't be any lower in 2028)."

Since the reported Xbox Project Helix delay isn't due to hardware issues, the leaker speculates it could be due to either software or production issues. "My guess (if the delay is real) is either a) Software-related (OS not ready? Waiting for a big launch-window exclusive?) b) MS waited too long to sign a GDDR7 LTA and don't have any supply to support a 2027 launch," the leaker said.

Additionally, if the next-gen Xbox indeed launches during Holiday 2028, the PlayStation 6 would be the first next-gen system to hit the market next year, provided it doesn't get delayed to late 2028. Sony has been silent on the matter, and a decision will likely be made early next year, according to a report from earlier this year.

With Xbox pivoting back to exclusives, it wouldn't be surprising if Project Helix is indeed delayed to coincide with the launch of a killer app that would make its projected high price slightly easier to swallow for the enthusiast crowd. It would obviously be a big gamble, given that no Xbox release is truly exclusive with PC versions launching on the same day, but it would still make some sense, considering the company's current strategy.

No matter the reason, there's no way Xbox Project Helix, and in turn the PlayStation 6, will be released later than 2028. As the high prices of components such as RAM and SSD are not projected to decrease anytime soon, both Microsoft and Sony would face far more complicated issues if they delay their systems any further than 2028.
