Lucasfilm is “exploring all kinds” of different Star Wars games
In the decade+ since Disney officially acquired Lucasfilm, we’ve seen the Star Wars owner being rather selective with its IP in the video games space, including but not limited to the 10-year exclusivity deal penned between itself and EA. Having officially expired back in 2023, Star Wars games have since come in many more shapes and forms – from turn based strategy games to racing titles. According to the IP owner this shift has been an intentional one, with Disney claiming that they are “exploring all kinds of things that large and small with partners that I think are going to continue to surprise folks.”
Taking part in an interview with the publication TheGameBusiness, Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilley sat down to discuss the IP owner’s current approach to green-lighting games based in the world of Star Wars, claiming:
“I think we've tried to be more flexible about like who we're willing to take pitches from and good ideas can come from a lot of different places. You don't have to necessarily be a top five publisher to make a great Star Wars game.”
Reilley continued, “We have a high quality bar and we want to make sure they’re excellent experiences and that means typically you work with more experienced teams than, you know, new teams who have no track record of making great things.”
Offering a slight tease on how this new approach is currently proceeding, the VP claimed that “We're exploring all kinds of things that large and small with partners that I think are going to continue to surprise folks who are like, ‘Oh, they're doing a thing with them. That might be interesting to see how that turns out.’”
As mentioned, ever since the 10-year deal between EA and Disney expired, we’ve seen a greater variety of well-regarded Star Wars games being released, including but not limited to Zero Company (a turn-based strategy game) and most recently Galactic Racer.
Given the sheer breadth of the Star Wars universe, you could pretty much find a way to create a game of any genre while still making sense, and so it is welcome to see Disney/Lucasfilm embracing such a notion.
