GTA 6 is finally launching next month on November 19 after two delays, but that doesn't mean Rockstar is sitting idly by. As with any project of this scope, "The game is never completely settled."

That's according to Rockstar director of technology Phil Hooker, as quoted by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier in a new video explaining why Grand Theft Auto 6 took over eight years to develop. "We never have an exact blueprint," Hooker said. "Even within the last few months, we've changed things."

That Doesn't Mean GTA 6 Will Be Delayed Again

That might ring alarm bells for some, but it's hardly unusual in game development. You're not going to see Rockstar suddenly overhaul the story or rewrite Jason's character from scratch, but with so many moving parts on a behemoth like GTA 6, things are bound to change. Development is practically a living organism constantly growing new limbs, but last-minute tweaks don't mean another delay is inbound.

Schreier is confident that Rockstar will hit its latest release date. To hear him say it, "It's October 2026. The game is actually imminent," he said. "It is actually in sight. It is actually going to happen soon. I guess never say never in the video game industry, but it does seem like this date is not going to change."

Thankfully, while the wait between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 6 has been so long that there hasn't been a single new Rockstar game in my 20s, future games shouldn't take nearly as long to develop.

Hooker told Schreier in a recent report that "the engine, the tools, and the team we've built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly."

"I feel confident that we can build on top of this and go more sideways than upwards to build more compelling content," he continued.

That doesn't mean we'll get a new GTA every year, but we could see iterative San Andreas and Vice City style sequels, or faster turnarounds on new games, whether that's Red Dead Redemption 3, a new IP altogether, or maybe even Bully 2 if we're lucky.
