CD Projekt RED CEO称《赛博朋克2077》电影不会直接改编游戏,公司大力投入跨媒体
The Cyberpunk 2077 Movie Won’t Be a Direct Game Adaptation, Says CDPR CEO as the Company Bets Heavily on Transmedia
Exactly one week ago, Deadline reported that CD Projekt RED had negotiated a deal with Paramount Pictures to adapt Cyberpunk 2077 into a live action film. Now, speaking to Polish website PAP Biznes, CDPR CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the news and shared a few key details. To begin with, it won't be a direct adaptation of the game's narrative:
At this point, we can only say that we definitely don't want to make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story.
This is indeed an interesting choice. If I'm completely honest, I'm glad for it, having already completed the game; seeing a one-to-one repeat of the same story wouldn't be as exciting as watching another story in the same universe.
By the way, Nowakowski also explained what happened with the previous contract:
Our contract with Anonymous Content expired, and in the meantime, an opportunity arose to establish cooperation with Paramount Pictures, and we decided that we would conduct a live-action Cyberpunk project in a new formula.
In October 2023, CD Projekt had indeed signed a deal with Anonymous Content, the American production company behind the likes of The Revenant, True Detective, Mr. Robot, 13 Reasons Why, East of Eden, and the upcoming Neuromancer adaptation. Garrett Kemble, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Bard Dorros were set to produce for Anonymous Content, alongside Charlie Scully. However, nothing came of it. The contract clearly had a three-year expiration date, which allowed CD Projekt RED to pursue other partners, such as Paramount Pictures.
Of course, it's too early to go into any further details on this live action movie. In the meantime, though, CD Projekt RED's CEO is looking forward to a boost of activity in Cyberpunk 2077 following the imminent debut of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' second season on Netflix:
In 2022, when the first installment of the anime debuted, we observed increased interest in the game. This was particularly noticeable during the series' premiere, but equally importantly, in the following months, game sales continued to exceed those observed before its premiere. We hope that this time we will also be able to invite anime viewers to our game. These types of events have two effects - we activate existing players and attract new recipients.
Shortly after Edgerunners, on November 6, the studio will also launch the Cyberpunk Trading Card Game, which broke records for tabletop funding campaigns on Kickstarter. Two expansions are already planned for 2027, with the ultimate goal of setting a pace of three expansions per year.
On the back burner of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, The Witcher IV, and all these transmedia projects, the studio is already considering potential adaptations for its secret new IP called Project Hadar:
We're already thinking about the franchise-related things we can do around this IP. We'd like the universe behind this project to join the family of the two existing ones. Therefore, ultimately, in the context of licensing and building brand recognition, we'd like to use similar solutions for Hadar that worked well in Cyberpunk and The Witcher.
