A new Halo prequel taking place before and during the events of Combat: Evolved is officially set to release later this month. Halo: Parasite's Wake covers the initial Flood engagement on Installation 04, letting fans see the events through the eyes of regular Marines.
The Halo franchise remains one of gaming's most valuable IPs, almost 25 years after it debuted on the original Xbox. Throughout the 2000s, the series established itself as a gaming powerhouse under Bungie. As its original developer moved on and 343 Industries took the reins, a succession of poorly received titles has caused its popularity to dwindle. When a new Halo release arrives, gamers still pay attention, but perhaps not with the same fanfare it had throughout the 2000s.
Halo: Parasite's Wake Novel Releases October 20
A new Halo prequel novel named Parasite's Wake is on the way on October 20, 2026, by author Tim Lebbon. Published by Gallery Books, this Halo horror novel is focused on the Flood outbreak on Installation 04. Rather than seeing it through the eyes of the Master Chief, like in the original game, Halo: Parasite's Wake tells the story from the perspective of UNSC Marines.
Who’s That Character?

Keen readers of Halo books will notice one key character returning with a bigger role in this novel. Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto, who was a minor character in William C. Dietz's 2003 novel Halo: The Flood, returns as the protagonist in this one, a cool connection for long-time fans of the series. The official summary for Halo: Parasite's Wake is as follows:
2552. As the planet Reach falls to the alien alliance known as the Covenant, a lone human ship—the UNSC Pillar of Autumn—fled into slipspace and has arrived at a place that could change the course of this decades-long war. An ancient, mysterious ringworld: Halo.
With human forces scattered across the surface of this immense alien construct, Staff Sergeant Marvin Mobuto must now lead his fellow crewmates—survivors from the ship’s brig—back to the Autumn’s crash site to rally and regroup with their allies. Desertion, drunk and disorderly, and murder are only a few of the charges that Mobuto's squad carries—and keeping them in line might prove to be just as difficult as surviving the zealous, entrenched Covenant warriors who believe they have found the gateway to paradise.
But as war rages across the ring's landscape for control of the installation’s weapons and secrets, a far more terrible threat from deep within Halo’s underworld is hellishly unleashed that transforms this conflict into a desperate battle of survival for UNSC and Covenant alike...
There have been tons of amazing Halo books released over the years, exploring many different periods in the series' timeline. It's important that these books aren't essential reading for fans of the game - requiring fans to engage with another medium entirely just to understand the games is never a great idea. But Halo has tended to manage it well, allowing the novels to be complementary for fans who just want a little more from the series.
While it's exciting to have a new Halo release to look forward to, the series is in a precarious situation at the moment. A few weeks ago, Xbox announced that Activision will develop the next Halo game, and Halo Studios has since suffered mass layoffs. Ripping the series from the hands of the studio created to helm it hints that the series seriously needs a hit.
