RuneScape Reignited Is Cancelled, Just Two Weeks After Announcement

Jagex has announced that it’s cancelling RuneScape Reignited, a new version of the long-running MMO, just two weeks after its initial announcement.
In a lengthy community post, creative director Mod Ryan says, “First of all, thank you for all the feedback since the announcement at Runefest. We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views. It is super important to us because the last time we didn’t listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that. Now I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited.”
Announced at RuneFest 2026, Reignited was essentially the WoW Forever version of RuneScape, letting both new and returning players start with a clean slate and experience the game as if everyone were playing it for the first time. However, the big problem, as many in the community pointed out, is that it would fracture an already small player base, and Reignited players wouldn’t be able to interact with main game players. At the time of announcement, in an interview with CGMag, creative director Ryan Philpott said,
“We’ve been remastering so many things and have been putting the game on a better path over the last years. We’ve made some changes through what we’ve been calling the Road of Restoration roadmap, and we’ve got this amazing roadmap ahead of us. With Reignited, you could essentially play RuneScape on December 2nd as if it’s a new MMO release, and I think that’s insane. You’ve got 25 years of content [to play], and you’re going to be here for a long time.”
The intent was obviously to help attract new players with Reignited, but Jagex also seemingly hoped it could bring lapsed players back to RuneScape 3 as well, seeing the game they knew in a “new light.” But it’s abundantly clear existing players didn’t feel that way, and to their credit, Jagex listened.
“It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it,” says Ryan, before noting that despite the cancellation coming as a disappointment to some, he truly believes December is a great time to continue or start a journey into RuneScape.

This cancellation does interestingly line up with something Philpott said to CGMag, about how Jagex’s focus is constantly on players.
“Our community is everything to us. I literally read every single comment I ever see on social media, and I’m in too many Discord servers where I’m reading everything. We, as a group of developers on RuneScape, care so much about what all the players have to say and what works and doesn’t work,” said Philpott. “We get things right, but we also get things slightly wrong sometimes, but, you know, it’s just the sort of thing that only works when you work for your players. This is something that RuneScape and Jagex as a whole…I think we’re just industry-leading at working with our players.
Aside from the cancellation of Reignited, the 2027 roadmap shared at RuneFest remains the same, with “decades-old storylines” coming to a close and a rework of the Agility stat.
Looking further out, RuneScape 4 was also announced at RuneFest. Although we don’t know much about it yet, or even a release window, it seems to be a next-gen version of the beloved MMO built on Unreal Engine.
