Nvidia reportedly ENDS GeForce RTX 5090 production in favor of AI data center and professional GPUs
Nvidia reportedly halts GeForce RTX 5090 production in favor of AI data center and professional GPUs — impending supply drought expected to drive up prices, RTX 5080 24GB rumored as new gaming flagship
No more GB202 for consumers?
Nvidia has reportedly ceased selling its GB202 graphics processors for consumer-grade GeForce RTX 5090-series add-in-boards (AIBs), according to a leaked notice from an unknown factory cited by @hongxing2020, who tends to have insights into the graphics card market. Another prominent leaker @Zed__Wang confirmed the report and said that from now on the GB202 silicon will be exclusively used on data center and professional graphics cards.
"According to a notification from the factory, Nvidia will no longer manufacture any RTX 5090 models, including the D variants," a message cited by @hongxing2020 reads. "Going forward, the highest-end GeForce graphics card will be the RTX 5080 24GB, while the RTX 5080 16GB version will be discontinued. Please spread the word."
This is, of course, an unverified claim and not an official Nvidia announcement. We asked Nvidia for a comment, though the company has yet to respond. Typically, Nvidia does not comment on rumors.
While the information is strictly unofficial for now, the alleged decision would make considerable economic sense for Nvidia, as the company can sell GB202 processors on data center and professional graphics cards that cost substantially more than the GeForce RTX 5090. In fact, Nvidia's recently introduced RTX Pro 5500 features the same number of CUDA cores — 21,760 — as the GeForce RTX 5090, but comes with 84GB of GDDR7 memory instead of 32GB and targets considerably more lucrative professional visualization (ProViz) and AI applications. Meanwhile, the fully-fledged RTX 6000 Pro with 24,064 CUDA cores and 96 GB of memory can easily sell for $15,000.
By discontinuing GB202-based GeForce products, Nvidia could prevent its relatively inexpensive consumer graphics cards from competing with its own professional accelerators in the lucrative AI sector. Essentially, the company is redirecting its limited semiconductor manufacturing allocation toward higher-margin products without necessarily sacrificing its position in the gaming market, as neither the GeForce RTX 5080 nor RTX 5090 have direct rivals.
Expect even USED prices for 5090s to go nuts in the coming year.
I'll believe it when I see it. There was reports at the start of the year that the 5060ti 16gb was eol, and can still get it, same for the 5070 iirc.
If it is true, then I feel bad for people with one. Warranty will be even more worthless than it already is (manufacturers dodging replacements already, so they can hoard and sell themselves. PNY denying warranty for nonsense and Zotac handing out refunds, sometimes partial instead of replace, I'm sure the others are up to no good as well), will be no where to go but down in performance.
looks like i'm stuck on my 3090 ftw3 forever now. so glad i upgraded the ol pc a few years ago b4 all this shit storm started

Good choice. If I did not have access to a P40 and a 3060 (12gb RAM) I would have went with that one.
But alas why waste money on GPU when I can play on the (dated) consoles I have
That being said, the 24gb VRAM being nice and all... but what do people even need it for.
To cache their windows so it can reboot quicker when it crashes ?
Nobody can afford a 5090 anyways, so I guess it doesn't matter one way or the other. The xx90 models were always overpriced. Nvidia should focus more on making affordable consumer GPUs rather than ones that only 0.01% will buy.
On a related note, if anybody wants high vram cards for their homelab, the Tesla V100 32GB cards are fairly affordable on eBay. They used to be a bargain, but they're still wayyyy cheaper than a 5090.
Well guess what? All the 5000 series cards are about to go way up too:
"A Redditor has shared a photograph of the prices of Nvidia RTX 50-series GPUs in Japan, and it doesn’t bode well for gamers. According to u/Chaise91’s post on the r/pcmasterrace subreddit, retail prices for some of the best gaming GPUs are somewhere between 5.66% and 41.1% higher compared to Amazon U.S. listings.
The memory chip shortage and massive demand for AI compute have been affecting the supply of gaming GPUs, with reports suggesting Nvidia is planning to halt RTX 5090 production in favor of AI data center and professional GPUs. Because of this, the supply of high-end GPUs has vanished online, with third-party sellers now demanding almost $10,000 if you want to buy one. The image shared on the social media platform does not show the RTX 5090, so we fear that retailers in the market no longer have the high-end graphics card in stock, leading to supply pressure on the lower-tier cards.
We built a table comparing the prices from the Japanese retailer to listings we found on Amazon based on the current exchange rate of JPY 153.38 for every USD 1, and the hikes vary between 12.71% on average for the RTX 5080 to a jaw-dropping 41.10% for the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB."
The average price for the 5060 TI 16GB that I bought in January for $440 is now $878.39! And I bought it after the RAMCopalypse began. (And people were whining about the $440 price at the time. I told them it isn't going down, only up. Bet they feel foolish now.)
It's the GDDR7/memory that is the problem. That's why Sony and MSFT cannot ship their next-gen consoles and Valve can't afford to keep shipping it's Steam Machine. Memory prices, assuming you can source memory/storage at all, are out of control.
